Ok, I know very little about Photography but I said I'd give these a post for a bit of crit. I only got into it after getting a D40 at Christmas, I don't get much time though. Anyway these were shot in Paris over the weekend with my D40 and the Kit lense. Then Photoshop CS3.

I have a few more but I haven't posted them on Flickr yet. These are literally my first attempt - The first real time I had my camera out.

    Cheers,

    iRock ;)

Awesome for a first attempt. Very nice, particularly number 2.

No 1 does nothing for me at all.

But, No 2, I really like. Nice colour (just), nice view, nice scene and plenty in it.

The right edge of your images both seem to have a dark shadow. Not sure if that's PP on your end.

I like the signposts in #1, but not the tree. The tree is too spidery compared to the solid blocks of the signs for me. But I like the style.

#2 is much better. Better subject matter, and the little bit of colour is nice. I think what you've done with it probably makes the shot more interesting that it might otherwise have been.

It might be me, but I prefer C&C'ing slightly smaller images though!

thats sucha nice shot of the bikes, unfortunatley mine did not come out at all,

your pics dont do it for me, the contrast is too high, please post originals. Despite that the angle for the second one is very good

I like #1, but #2 seems utterly over processed. The soft focus at the edges I like, but it moves to pin-sharp focus a little right of centre.

I think you may have over did it in photoshop. I myself am not great at PS, but with the originals, some of the lads here could process a nice shot from the second

Not a fan of #1, #2 is nice but parts of it just don't look right, I think you've over done it in PS maybe...

    Upload the masters! :D

2 definitely has great potential.. For your first time they are excellent.. well done.. Keep it up now..

Like No 2 but would prefer it sharp whereas this looks soft to me or maybe that is from the processing. Paris is a great place to take photos :) (and one of the suggested destinations for first International Boards.ie Photo Meet)

I think 2 would probably be fine if you got rid of the faux vignetting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,200 ✭✭✭kensutz

Number 2 has potential but at the moment they do nothing for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

2 defo has potential but at the moment... all its doing is burning my eyes with the over exposure :( - little over processed aswell maybe?

    Nice try though

    I would agree too.

Just a comment (as a DSLR beginner). Doesn't anyone just take photographs anymore. Why the obsession with Photoshop by some?

Personally as i am only starting i don't really have a "style" just yet, still kind of finding my feet with both PS and taking photo's!

At the moment, i tend to just use PS to see if i can make a good interesting shot out of a bad boring one!

OP, i like No.1 , especially the reflection of the tree's on the signs.

I'd agree that there can be a kinda over-reliance on Photoshop in photography (on the internet especially), but if you take photos on a digital camera you really should try to process them a bit. That's why a computer for photo processing is referred to as the digital darkroom - digital shots need a bit of extra work on a computer just like film prints do in a darkroom.

I think the reason everyone's mentioned Photoshop in this thread so far is that the photos being discussed have already been over-processed in Photoshop.

    Nice shots though, keep practicing!

    Hey everyone,

Sorry about the delay in reply. I have been travelling the last few days and I didn't have access to a broadband connection.

Thanks to all for the feedback both positive and negative, I really feel its the best way to learn.

I have to admit, it is obvious that I went too far with photoshop!

I have uploaded the two originals below as requested, feel free to mess about with them.

Again, as I said I don't know anything about photography so I guess its all up hill from here!

    ;):D

I prefere the originals already, with minor PS work they could be quite good

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,558 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

I like the street scene still.
If it mine I'd probably tweak it but keep it almost the way it was.

I really like this :D I really need to get better at Photoshop :(

    Any recommendations?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

Less is more. The less you have to do in Photoshop the better your images can look.

But, it depends on taste and style.

A shade green don't you think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,966 ✭✭✭elven

It is rather green... is that on purpose? It looks a bit like a print that's old and discoloured actually.

Am I the only person to prefer the second image? I'm not sure what the attraction is with the first one - it just seems like a street to me, there's no story I can see, no graphical composition as such apart from the row of bikes but i don't see the significance of the bloke on the phone. Am I missing something? What was it about the scene that made you point the camera in the first place? Serious question, not taking the mince!

I'm trying really hard not to pick up on the fact that someone said they use photoshop to make a boring photo interesting. Not biting, nuh-uh...

    Very green

I agree with Elven - the only interesting thing is the row of bikes. I would have got in closer to just include them (but that's easy to say in retrospect), never mind Photoshop.

So do I - the quality is stunning. But I take on board what everyone says about PS. I suppose it is also inherently part of the scene as people have pointed out.:)
