    iPhone: 02 Ireland; T-Mobile Austria
iPhone software update contains support code for Austria and Ireland
    Jonny Evans

The latest iPhone software update integrates code designed to support usage of the device in new geographies, Ireland and Austria.

Italian Mac news website Macitynethas taken a look inside the update, only to discover new software packages designed to support usage of the iPhone on T-Mobile in Austria and O2 in Ireland.

However, the iPhone hasn't yet been made available for public sale in either country, and no announcement as to the dedicated network for the device in Ireland has been made.

T-Mobile Austria product development chief Hamid Akhavan has gone on record to promise the iPhone will be made available in Austria by summer on his network.

Don't read too much into it just yet. iTunes Movie Rentals text was present in versions of iTunes since the late 7.4's IIRC. It could all change yet, or could be some time coming.

...it's too late, I'm already excited!!

it's the first bit of tangible iPhone news for Ireland I've seen, apart from the 3G shop owner having discussions with Apple.

C'mon Apple, give us the iPhone and movie rentals!

O2 signed up for it ages ago, they just had to fix the Edge network for the iPhone which has it's own way of doing things.

well I'm using it on O2 (switched from vodafone last week) and it works an absolute treat!!!

the data rates are really nice, averaging 190kbps, youtube streaming is fine maps etc. All much faster.

    And at €15 for 1Gb of transfer....sweet

The EDGE network isnt really the problem. EDGE is a defined protocol the iPhone cant do things too much differently from other EDGE phones. I was working in the US with AT&T last year when they launched the iPhone, there wasnt any work needed on their EDGE network - bar some capacity upgrades in cells covering Apple Stores and AT&T stores. Theres is however a lot of back end system work that needs to be done by the operator because of the iPhone activation/registration process (done via iTunes). So Apples systems need to be integrated with the operaters provisioning and billing systems.

Doesn't edge already work on O2 with iPhone?
Vodafone's edge setting work fine on all versions.
