Off-setting Flight

    Hi,

I've never posted in this forum before so sorry if this has been asked already.

I'm moving to Australia next month and was looking for a way to 'make up' for the long flight. I was thinking of buying a tree but I have no garden or anywhere to put it. Does Coilte or anyone have a buy-a-tree scheme? Or would there be a better way of going about it?

    Suggestions welcome :)

Don't worry about it. Long haul flights are kinda ok. Its jaunts to England and Europe that cause the bulk of the damage. Abuse an SUV driver and its all square:D

It still pollutes and does no harm to offset http://www.nativewoodtrust.ie/ have a tree sponsoring scheme.

    Have a look at http://swiss.myclimate.org/EN/

AFAIK, its not tied only to participating airlines.

I passed through Eindhoven airport recently and they had slot machines which would calculate the cost of your CO2 emissions and you could donate that amount by CC to green charities in the 3rd world

maybe someone knows a web site that you could calculate it in

getting the plane up to speed and altitude and then the coltrolled landing takes a lot of the energy, on short flights more is used than in the rest of the flight.

on that flight the weight of fuel is probably the same as the weight of the plane, passengers and luggage combined , so a couple of 100Kg

maybe go down to the forest in autumn and collect seeds and then plant them in the spring - cut out the middle man.

another alternative if you are a meat eater is go veggie for a while

Were they plugged into the mains?

I advise investing in reforestation schemes in Indonesia, Africa or Brazil. This would do much more good than just planting a tree where you live.

Another possibility is of donating to setting up a wind farm in some country like China. There's a great Australian company called Climate Friendly that does this.

Tbh, offsetting is a bit dubious. As you're presumably committed to this flight there's not much you can do, except maybe resolve to lower the emissions which you are personally responsible for in the future.

Would it not be better to eat some of those belching, farting cows & save the vegetation.

I can't believe this, people actually wanting to voluntarily pay for a carbon offset. Don't worry love, because of brainwashed people like yourself, we will all have to "offset" by law.

So in conclusion, just sit it out, in a year or so this problem will be sorted out by your loving/thoughtful government.

I think the idea is to reduce demand. Eating meet gives incentive to breed more cows and cut down more forest on which they can graze.

Personally I don't think that we should have to sacrifice meat-eating to fight climate change. Reduce it, yes, but not abandon this ancient dietary practice.
