This cinema has been in development for some time but the Light house cinema in Smithfield is nearly ready to open!

Great news, nice to have a bit of variety and its got double the screens the IFI has.

Hopefully it will concentrate a bit more on classic cinema and interesting festivals and retrospectives(the IFI horrorthon needs a good kick up the arse and maybe this could do it?) as this is something the IFC doesnt do enough of.

Awesome. I was just thinking yesterday that I wish there was another arthouse in Dublin.

Old enough to remember when it opened in the late '80s. Can't remember the main movie but the one upstairs was a French one called 4 Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle. Best movie I saw there was Drowning By Numbers.

I only just got to it as it was closing ... Saw Johnny Depp in Ed Wood at it, amoungst some foriegn language films.

God be the days when you had to go to an Arthouse cinema to see Johnny in a film ...

    Afternoon Folks!

Delighted to read about your interest in Light House Cinema re-opening. I'm helping Light House Cinema answer posts about the cinema and letting people, especially people like you who have expressed an interest in the cinema, know about what's going on. Firstly online booking will open on May 1st 2008 at www.lighthousecinema.ie and as you have read the official opening will be on May 9th 2008.

Light House will continue to place a real emphasis on films which engage with cultural diversity and focus on personal expression as they did previously. All the films will be certified and membership won't be required. Their first 3 films are Honeydripper directed by John Sayles, XXY directed by Lucia Puenzo and Caramel directed by Nadine Labanki is slated to be shown shortly. More info about all 3 at www.lighthousecinema.ie

In the meantime if you use Facebook please consider joining the Light House Cinema Facebook Fan Page at:

Tapas-style nibbles will be on offer too.

Went to the Lighthouse today to see the Mike Leigh film.
Pretty nice set-up, though I can see someone taking a tumble on those stairs and I'd allow a good while for a pre-film coffee.

    Unisex toilets!!!

Heh, monkeyfudge had pretty much the same things to say

I feel its biggest problem is that there is alot of empty space.

If it is in the same market as the IFI they can really fill it up with a bar and a shop, there is seriously far too many big gaps.

otherwise i think its quiet nice.

Must pop down during the week - didn't get a chance to see Happy Go Lucky before it finished in the IFI so gives me a good film to go down for a test run.

Unisex toilets? I'm pretty sure the one I was in had a picture of a little man on the door.

Almost tripped on those steps twice today... it's very hard to see where one step ends and the other begins if you're not concentrating on looking at the floor.

Maybe it's just the one on the way in. The one I visited had a man coming out of it as I was going in. Shock? I almost got pregnant - the nuns warned us about how these things happen...

The steps are going to be a problem. They also require a longer pace than normal which is not so bad coming up, but difficult enough going down.

Overall though, I liked the place and wish them the best of luck.
