A friend of mine has a water problem, there is no cold water coming from a mixer tap in the kitchen sink. There is hot water however but no cold water. The house is a bungalow. There is water coming from taps in toilet and shower.

Very simply, there is a problem with the mains supply. The cold tap in the kitchen is invariably fed directly from the mains. The cold taps everywhere else are supplied by the tank in the attic space. All hot taps come from the immersion tank which is also supplied from the cold tank.

Be aware that every time you run a tap or shower, hot or cold, you are using up what little water is left in the storage tank in the attic. You will eventually, and unexpectedly run out of water completely fairly soon if you're not careful.

Get your friend to call the local county council and ask them what the problem is. That should shed some more light on it.

In the meantime, use as little water as possible!

sounds like someone turned off the mains.
All the other water in the house will be coming from the tank in the attic.
Get them to check if this is still filling.
If it is its not the mains to the house but either a dodgy tap or a valve before the kitchen tap.

ring the local council to see if there is any work being done on the mains supply.
