Thinking of buying a new desktop. The model I have in mind (Dell Inspiron 530) does not come with a modem. I use mobile broadband on my laptop. Can I use this on the desktop without having a modem or wireless card installed?

Yes. Modem is only used for dialup connections over phoneline, not broadband. You'll be able to plug your mobile broadband card into the desktop and it will connect.

Wait, your using a 3g or vodafone type broadband? If it uses pcmcia as the interface (that long flat kinda things) they will more than likely NOT be supported by your desktop, most of these mobile bb services are designed for on the go laptops so I dont think there is a pc adaptor, could be wrong though!

Could be the USB version as well...

Or you could install a CardBus/PCMCIA to PCI Card in a free PCI slot.

Alternatively, if the laptop and desktop both have ethernet ports, you could connect them with a crossover cable and run internet connection sharing on the laptop.
