Thoughts on if this laptop is right for me?

    Hi,
I am looking for a laptop for business use. It will not be used for anything other than MS office, Viewing and downloading pictures and Internet access. Price is the main concern - we were hoping to get laptop, MS office and virus software for €600 (including VAT) ( but we can go a bit more if needbe). Did not want to get Vista but not sure where to buy other than PC World who do not offer any laptops with XP.

Here is what was recommended to me by PC World:
Advent 1115C, Intetl pentium dual core processor t2310 (1.46 GHz, 533MHz FSB, 1MB cache), 2GB Memory, Vista Home Premium, 120 GB hard drive, 15.4 brightview widescreen, dvd rw dual layer, Wifi enabled Price €599.97. Offering MS office & Norton for a further €150.

    Thoughts or recommendations?
    Thanks.

    Dell Vostro 1500

Select XP Pro rather than Vista, add in Office Basic (Word and Excel but not Powerpoint or Access).

You've 2GB RAM and a modest graphics card.

    Haven't selected an anti-virus - don't like either.

There's free shipping, so total incl VAT is €650.

Thanks for that suggestion - do you think it's worth paying the €15 extra to get the Display with TrueLife?

Also what would you do for virus protection?

AVG. Its free and works well without clogging up your system. Norton is a dog.

Can you use AVG for businesses? I thought it was only for home/non-profit use?

They do licences for small business/enterprise. Not free as suggested though.

Bingo, it's only for home and non-commercial use. I don't know of any free anti-virus package that allows you to use it for commercial use so it looks like you're going to have to pay for it. Nod32 is meant to be the best anti-virus at the moment. I haven't used it myself but it's supposed to be great. I don't know what the price is but if it's similar in price to the other av software then you may as well get it.

You could save yourself some money by getting rid of office and going with open office. It's a free alternative to ms office and allows you to open files saved in office format. Any thing you save can be saved in a ms office format so people with ms office will be able to open it.
