I haven't been getting out to do much shooting over the last while ... This is why. On the other hand, I now have a ready made captive portrait subject (and audience though I guess I'll have to wait a while for that :-))

Anyhow, my girlfriend wanted some B&W shots. All I had in the fridge in B&W 35mm was a roll of Ilford XP2 which is a C-41 B&W film which I'd bought by accident one day in boots. I figured I'd drag out the strobe and start practicing though. Couple of things wrong with them ... Havent' really nailed the focus I think on some of them, but I don't think thats neccessarily a dreadful thing. I also could try being a bit more adventurous I reckon as regards the actual portrait. So ... without further ado :-)

Some nice shots Daire, first and second are the best. As you say yourself you need to be a bit more adventurous in the posing. Lovely grain in the shots..

I like the 3rd one, expression is good, looks like he/she doesn't want to hear stuff :)

    Hi Daire,

I'm positive they are going to be great to look back on it the future. To remove myself from the Awwww place for a minute, I wonder have you cropped too tight on all in the set. The old guide of never crop at a limb is pretty evident in the above although i have to say i never thought about it when it came to babies. For me #2 is probably the best (imho and from my eye's perspective). Given that it's a 'littler' person being photographed there is probably a thinner line than normal in terms of where to crop. How and ever, i've no doubt you and your g/f will look back 'goo-ing and gaa-ing' over them.

    Cheers.

congratulations! I love the expression in the first one I do think they're a little tightly cropped, although if you were to hang them as a 'set' in a panarama style frame they might just work

I am not going to steal your baby, he is the cutest thing in the world!!

As for C&C, I rarely post here (2 posts maybe!!) but I love #2, the shadows in it are brilliant. #3 looks like he's not going to listen to anybody!!

    Thanks all :-)

Yeah definately need to work on composition and posing all-right. These ones I took by focusing as close as possible with my 50mm and rocking backward and forward until I was in focus. Shoulda stopped down a bit there for a start given that I was using a flash.

I think in fact that ALL of these pictures were taken when he was in the throes of -ahem- "pushing one out" . Otherwise he's either completely impassive, asleep, or screaming his head off. I'm told that'll improve

Incidentally, has anyone ever wet-printed from C-41 B&W film ? The base has a bit of a magenta tinge to it that I don't think will do the multigrade paper any favours ...
