    I recently installed a new motherboard into a friends computer. An ASROCK P4VM-900 , with on board sound, using a Realtek ALC660 HD chip. Problem is that I do not get any sound from the speakers, and in the audio volume properties all the speakers are grayed out. In that I cannot adjust the volume of the front speakers. It kind of appears that the system is not sensing anything connected to the line out socket. I have installed and uninstalled the driver and software several times. I have not re-installed the OS don't see why I cannot get it going.

    System = Emachines E420
    OS = Windows XP SP2
    Please please help it is driving me mad.

    Sounds like you have the wrong driver. Is it XP?

    Check if the driver is in device manager:
    Right click my Computer > manage
    Device Mgr.
    See if there's an exclamation mark under Sound, video and game controllers

    Did you install the driver that came with the motherboard?

    The driver reports as fully working no indications that either the incorrect driver is installed or that it is installed incorrectly.

    Where does it report that it's 'fully working'?

    I have a USB audio device that I use, when it's plugged in the standard windows volume settings are greyed out.
    Maybe try and see if the service is running:
    Right click my Computer > manage
    Services and applications > services
    Check if 'Windows Audio' service is running.
