Im a 20 yr old student from galway and planning on hitting the states for a year come sept or so.. Im graduating in May with degree in commerce. Seems like the whole process is gonna be tough tho..

Firstly gotta sort out some sort of visa, and im told im gonna need to have a job sorted before i go out AND i have no idea on how to do either right now..

Thinkin Boston or Chicago for this break too.. :)

    Any advice/thoughts would be great..

unless you entered the green card lottery and win it's pretty tough to get a visa for a year or even a visa to work. The only really option is a H1B visa. For this you are required to have a bachelors degree and the company must be willing to sponsor you and can prove that you can do the work that a US citizen can not. There is a cap on the number of these visas issued each year. Think it's around 60 or 70 thousand. you'd also have to work in the same position and the same company. a few years ago it would have been a lot easier but their economy isn't the best right now and also there is literally hundreds of thousands Americans with the same qualifications as you and they can hire them without paying legal fees. the visa itself can be expensive too.

I got a green card when i was 18 and i had friends wanting to go through the same process as you are looking in to. none were successful

ouch.. knew the process would prob be tough but from what im hearing its near impossible to get this sorted.. :(

Not plannin on leaving until sept/oct so got some time yet, but would really like to get everything moving a bit.. I heard today that there is an "internship visa" that enables u to stay and work for up to 18mths (which sounds good) but i stil need to have graduate employment sorted before i head out..

    Aaaargh

You should try Sayit Travel they have a department that deals with the J1 Internship Visa.

Also you could try this link: http://www.aiesec.org/AI

    Hope you get it sorted.

I live and work in Chicago, I got my visa through a parent who happens to be a citizen though. If you do end up coming over though I can give some advice on where to start.
