Replaced hard disk and cannot get installer to see it - Imac G5

I replaced the hard disk in my imac g5 today because I was seeing a 2STF/1/4:S ATA Bus 0 Master error when running the Apple Hardware test utility.

Reason I ran that was because the machine was not starting - I would hear the gong and then the grey screen would appear and then the fan would go into overdrive and the machine froze.

So I placed a new hard disk in and attempted to do an install of the OS but when iot came to choosing where to install to no disk appeared.

Trying to run the hardware test thing now results in the same response even though there is a new disk in there.

Anybody got any idea on my next steps?

Coincidently I'm replacing the drive in my MacBook Pro just now. The drive will need to be erased using the Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu at the top of the screen. You can simply "Erase" the drive or create Partitions - up to you. Once done your installer will see the drive.

Thanks for the reply zener - unfortunately the new hard disk is invisible to the dist utility also so I cannot select it

hope this isn't taken badly, open the iMac again and check the power and harddrive cables at both the hdd and the logic board, as the logic board connection can often become loose during a repair. also check the jumper settings on the hdd i know with some machines the cs option can cause problems so try it without if its currently enabled or with if currently not It all points to a connection problem since the drive is new, does the drive spin up with the machine turned on?. Also as Zener pointed out above once a new drive is installed it will need to be formatted by disk utility before the installer proper will recognise it.

I think maybe you should re-seat all the connections. Sounds like it isn't installed properly.

What does the page "About This Mac > More Info > Serial ATA " say?
