Converting VHS to DVD

I bought this from Maplin a few weeks ago and it worked fine with my computer however it outputted a .mpg file over 9 gigs for a 2 hour VHS.

Im wondering is there a way to convert that to something smaller to burn onto a dvd or what I could do to get it onto a dvd. I think it is a bit ridiculous that a program supposed to output a file for burning to dvd gives a file nearlty 10 gigs in size!

Look for an option to set the target media size - you may be able to change the default from DVD-9 to DVD-5. If that's not an option, is there a bitrate setting in the encoding software? You'll need to drop the bitrate to half of the current value to make it fit. If the option is not available directly, you'll probably need to change it with this:
    • HQ, SP and LP encoding quality modes ensure video quality and size

The file size is reasonable for someone using dual-layer (DVD-9) media.

    Question, how's the overall quality?

The quality is as good as the original. Though with the recording I have at the moment thats not great because its literally a 25 year old tape I was copying. I havent tried anything newer yet. Dont see the point till I fix the file size problem!

Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I can convert the .mpg file into to make it more compact. Or even something good I could compress it with?
