I won't be going to see on the strength of the trailer alone. The last Brendan Gleeson film I saw was the worst film I've ever seen.

Saw it at DIFF last week. Genuinely funny film. Wouldn't make you want to visit Bruges though.

Who cares? Those actors have had their day. Says it all when the poster explains where Bruges is. What this country needs are more movies like Garage. Original movies with new talent - not high-profile actors who have recently appeared in a few turkeys attempting to restore their credibility.

The reference on the poster to Bruges being in Belguim is a joke from the film. It might be handy to actually go and see the film before passing judgement on it.

I saw it at the JDIFF last week and I thought it was a really refreshing change from some of the recent films that Irish talent has produced.

The screenplay was hilarious and the performances were great. It was a film that didn't take itself seriously and had a real spark of fun about it. I highly recommend it.

I think I've had it up to here with the slightly depressing, parish-kitchen sink dramas that the likes of Garage seems to belong to, and that Ireland do so "well". I'm looking forward to In Bruges precisely because it seems like something fresh & new.

Saw the trailor tonight - looks crap, like they're playing for laughs - one of those movies where the cast has a wonderful time making it but the audience won't watching it.
Will definitely go and check it though but not expecting much.

Early reviews (I think it was aintitcool.com) suggested that the trailer was giving a false impression that the movie was just a simple wise-cracking criminal comedy; that it was in fact a little darker than that.

Doesn't look too bad. I stayed in Bruges for a few days myself a few months back...very quaint little place...too 'perfect' looking, full of rich tourists. So I guess it's an interesting setting for a film

I liked the book but I think I turned the film off. Which is a shame because the Commitments and The Snapper were both good movies.

Saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it. I was at the first screening at a quater to seven and there were only six other people there. I spent most of the film quietly laughing away to myself much to the annoyance of a woman in her late 20s sitting three aisels down. At one point she turned to me and told me that if I thought "this film is funny I need serious help".

Some great dialogue really holds the film together and both Gleason and Farell are on fine form, as is Ralph Fiennes who plays demented to a tee. One I'll definetly be going to see again in the not too distant future.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,556 ✭✭✭Nolanger

Went to see it and it wasn't great but not terrrible. Thought Fiennes' character was a weak version of Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast. The story was too contrived in places and a bit boring but the movie was better than expected. Nothing special though.

Best new film Ive seen so far this year (Cloverfield was utter sh1t. No Country for Old Men was ok but hardly Oscar worthy). Hilarious stuff, great lines, Farrells acting was v occasionally a bit iffy but Gleeson is quite possibly the best Irish actor currently working. Slowed occasionally in the middle to end but no more than 10 mins, all in all great stuff after some recent overhyped letdowns. Just the crazy oddness of some of it really mad it (Farrell and his fascination with midgets, the East London gangster with an obsession with Bruges, analogies used etc etc etc.). All in all 8.5 out of 10, well worth seeing.

And how ****ing fine was the cast? The Belgian actress/drug dealer, the prostitutes, the hotel owner, the only mutts were the yank tourists :D

As for good Irish comedy, The Van, Intermission, Man About Dog (if you can get over the shock of Pat Shortt actually being funny in something bar Father Ted).

    Oh, come on!

    http://www.metacritic.com/film/awards/2007/toptens.shtml

The film appeared on more critics' top ten lists (354) than any other film of 2007, and was more critics' #1 film (90) than any other.

It was a killfest with a weak enough plot. It was ok, but no more than a six. Your man Bardem certainly deserved his Oscar, but best picture? Meh.

    Anyway, back on topic :)

Just saw this today and have to say I was very dissapointed.

It had alot of elements that would make a good film but they didn't exactly gel together in this. Gleeson was the only one on form and that was him playing a particularly un-interesting character. Alot of the jokes were offensive, but lacked the wit needed to make them acceptable, such as the fat jokes and racist jokes. The only offensive jokes that didn't seem out of place were the 'retard' jokes and that was only because it's such a popular word in our culture.

The gore was particularly strange, infact the whole film was strange and quirky.
    I don't understand its praise.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,584 ✭✭✭shane86

Really? I liked it because it has one of the most original left of field plots Ive seen in some time.

And the look on Gleasons face after
takin a whack of the coke Farrell stole off the Belgian girl
    was priceless :D

    Loved it!

Went to see it this afternoon in Cineworld and haven't been at a more packed screening in a while, nor one with so many laughs.

Farrell and Gleeson are on top form, particularly Gleeson, with great chemistry between them. The plot is decent too and quite original, unpredictable with moments to the film which you definitely wouldn't expect. Hilariously funny too.
    Also had a great score.

    8.5/10

Is farrell going to make an appearance in Harry Potter??
Poésy, Feinnes and Gleeson all in one movie again, Goblet of Fire reunion. It did seem that the cast were very comfortable with each other in this movie, could this have helped I wonder?

Thought that it was a very good movie to watch. It delt with some very dark undertones, yet in a fairly humorous manner. I thought that Farrell and Gleeson were wonderful on screen together and hope to see them again. It seemed to reawaken the acting ability of Farrell.

    PS
the look on Gleeson's face after the coke was, indeed, comic gold

Excellant movie! Wasn't expecting much but it's great to be surprised by a movie that you think is going to be muck. Some really great one-liners too, my favourite being
Farrell after hitting the Canadian who he thinks is American "Thats for John Lennon, ye yankie f*ck!"
The look on Brendan Gleesons after he took the cocaine face was just classic!

Went to see this last night. I was left dissapointed. It's far to long and as mentioned earlier very contrived.
Its not a patch on I Went Down or Grosse Point Blank. Colin Farrell is pretty crap actor. He can pull off the cheeky chappy stuff but very little else.

loved this film one if not the best Farrell performance of his career i'd give it 9 out 10 take 1 off for the length

I enjoyed this film more than expected, but I still think it was only above average. As a comedy I thought it was pretty so-so: the sequence in the restaurant being the only real comedic highlight I think. Other running jokes wore thing,
especially the 'midget' ones, which were funny at first, but not so much by the end
. Also, thought the film played the often racist / backwards attitudes of characters for laughs a bit too often - so prevalent as to make me question how satirical they were really meant to be.

However, the film really does pick up as a thriller in the final act, full of tension and excitement. Also, some of the scenes are indeed shocking and dark:
the shock child-killing flashback being particularly notable as a very powerful sequence, or Gleeson's final descent
    .

Thought the characters were likable too - bit more depth than you would expect in a typical 'buddy' movie. Colin Farrell is especially surprising - never really liked the guy, but thought he portrayed his difficult character very well. Ralph Fiennes and Brendan Gleeson also both play interesting roles, quite different than what we would usually suspect.

But overall a very strange and different film. This is often positive, sometimes negative. Lots of weird moments which I'm not really sure I liked or not
e.g. the prolonged phonecall between Fiennes and Gleeson, or their dialogue in the bell tower
. Worth a watch, but is a film which seems occasionally uncertain of itself, and emerges as a fun but uneven experiment.

Saw this the other day and have to say it's very good. I've seen a lot of dribble in the cinema recently but it's good to see something fresh and new and in-your-face. A lot of the dialogue is out there to offend but I think Irish people will find it very funny.

Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell both on top form. Too many one-liners to remember..The bit where
Ray is getting chased by the big American chap was brilliant. "Give it up fatty!".
. The moment that stole the show was indeed
the look on Ken's face after getting stoned!
I thought that the racist jokes were hilarious but then again I love offensive jokes. Thought the
midget was hilarious but some of the stuff really annoyed me. Like when he cockily said "..brothels are good". Maybe it was his accent but it just annoyed me

Anyway, nice to see a dark Irish comedy. Ralph Fiennes was excellent in it too.
    "You're an anaminet object!
Love his accent in it too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭RichyX

I thought it was only ok.

The ending relies too much on coincidence, and the entire existence of the key character in that particular scene seems to be just to satisfy one idea the writer had.
I found the pacing to be a bit off, there was a serious lull in the middle and it could have done with being about 10-15 minutes shorter.
Too many of the laughs relied on Farrell's character going on about how dull Bruges is.

I get the feeling if the characters were anything but Irish the entire thing would lose any bit of charm it may have.

On a positive note there were a couple of good laughs, the performances were all quite reasonable and it was well shot. The scene with the Canadians was a highlight.

    4/10

I went into this film without expectations and I came out with a big smile. I really enjoyed this movie. Script and acting were very good. It had a combination of violence and comedy that you dont normally see. That and the fact that some jokes were'nt exactly PC may put off the more delicate among us. But I for one am giving this movie the thumbs up.

Does anybody know why it had such a limited relese in the US?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

I only saw it the other night; I thought it was very good - certainly lived up to the hype surrounding it & the reputation of McDonagh. Lots of crudity, violence & plenty of "taboo" humour, but I think the average person is intelligent enough to know the difference between dark humour and geniune prejudice on the part of McDonagh.

Oh, and more comedy roles from Colin Farrell please! He's a natural comic actor & has the perfect range / face for it. Some of his moments were eerily Father Dougal-esque.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,535 ✭✭✭Raekwon

I saw this last night and really enjoyed it. Bruges was a perfect location, the script was hilarious and the three main actors (Farrell, Gleeson & Fiennes) were all absolutely perfect for their roles. I didn't think that it would have be as violent as it was but overall it balanced out well with the dark humour and wasn't really over the top (a lá Severance).

    Overall, highly recommended :)

    8.5/10

Fleur from the Harry Pothead movies was looking very hot and
it was nice when they upped the game from the slapstick hintings of the trailer by killing the kid
    . Well worth a watch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,792 ✭✭✭Mark Hamill

I saw In Bruges today and while I loved it, I have a question about a scene:
During the flash back where you see Farrell shoot the kid, he bursts into the room after shooting the priest and sees the kid who got shot. However while Colin Farrell is looking forward, the kid is facing to his right with the exit wound on his forehead (ie pointing to Farrells right) This made me think that Farrell didn't actually shoot the kid, Gleeson did (he came in from Farrells left, so he would have been behind the kid in the right place).
Now maybe I saw it wrong, or I'm just reading into the scene too much (ie it was just a mistake), but I wonder did anyone else notice this
