I posted here last week in relation to an interview i went for. Anyway, i'll start again from the beginning. Sorry about the length of the post.

I'm returning to college in Sept 2008 to do a full time masters so basically I have been looking around since the new year for a job up until Sept 2008. During the month of January I registered with a recruitment agency. The agency consultant (call her Ann) informed me that there was a particular role in Company A that I might be interested in, which I was. So an interview was arranged for Company A. It went very well and I was told that I would hear back via the agency. Got a call from the Ann saying that they wanted me for a 2nd interview. Fine. Went to 2nd interview which lasted a full hour long and again it went very well.

Anyway, I got a voicemail from Ann about 5 days after 2nd interview saying that unfortunately I didn't get the job and that they would be keeping my CV on file. A bit surprised as they kept me in for an hour for the 2nd interview. The next day I got another voicemail from Ann saying that there had been a hugh mistake made and that I actually did get the job. Apparently the guy (call him John) from Company A who rang the agency with a list of people to regret and to accept actually got the lists mixed up. So I called into the agency and Ann was apologetic about the mix-up, not taking responsibility at the same time, blaming John for the mix up. Grand, I was told I should expect a call from Company A the next day to confirm that I was staying around until end of Spet 2008 and that i wasn't going anywhere.

Got a call the next day at 1.10pm from the woman who interviewed me in Company A. She spoke for a minute and then passed me onto some other woman who interviewed me in French for 5 minutes (because I had conversational French on my CV). I was a little shocked as I wasn't informed that a phone interview through french was going to take place. I told the french interviewer this but she continued to ask questions in French. After the 5 minutes she passed me back onto original woman who I told that i was completely unaware that this was going to take place. She was apologetic and said that I should have been informed by Ann in the agency that this was going to take place. I wasn't! I told her of the mix up with the lists during the week, which she wasn't aware of. She said she'd sort it out.

I received a phone call that evening (Friday) from John in Company A who messed up. He apologised but again he didn't take full responsibility, partly blaming the agency. John said that "isn't the way we do things here" and that i'd understand that once I start with the company. John rang again on the Monday. We agreed on a starting salary and date (25th Feb) and said he'd contact Ann in the agency and get her to send the contract out for me to sign. He also said i'd receive an email on Thursday (yesterday) directly from the company stating a few pointers for my first day. I spoke with Ann on Monday afternoon and she said that she would have the contract in Monday evening's post. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday passed and no contract. I phone Ann and leave a message for her to call me back. No call. I call John directly and inform him that I haven't received the contract. John says he'll contact Ann and see what the story is. I call into Ann in person and she says that contract has been posted out on tuesday and I should receive it soon. I received the contract in this morning's post. There was a 21 Feb 2008 stamp on envelope which suggested that it was only posted on Thursday, after Ann told me that she posted on Tuesday!

As of now (Friday afternoon) I still haven't received an email from the Company about Monday. I don't really know what to think. I'm very p*ssed off about the whole situation. Any advice? Are they taking the p*ss out of me? Thanks for reading this far down :)

The first part of this post is familar was it posted before?

As for your "problem" to be honest I dont really see one. Sign the contract and return it to the agency or company while keeping a copy for yourself.

Contact the company today explaing that you never received the email and could they check it was sent. Also ask who you should report to on Monday moening when you start.

Looks like one cock up after another. But this can be normal when recruitment agencies get involved because you are adding a middle man.

If the job is what you want just sign the contract and get on with it. You won't be working with the recruitment agency again (hopefully)

I think the real question is:

Do you really want to work for a company that is totally and utterly disorganized?

    Also:

Do you really want to continue with an agency that is also totally and utterly disorganized?

If the job is PERFECT then you should fight for it. If there are other jobs out there, then maybe you should consider getting another agency and applying elsewhere.

I agree, with MCMLXXXIII if you really want the job you ignore it and if you don't you tell them what to do. I remember your previous post; personally i think both the recruitment agent and company are incompetent. But a job is the “job” so if you want to you could show up on Monday or ignore them and keep searching

You're going to be there to September, you have a job fixed and don't have to keep looking for another one, does it really matter how disorganised they are? You're going in there to work for 6 months, go there, stick your head down and walk out after your six months are up. You're one experience richer, got some more money on your pocket and something more for your CV instead of a blank period.

It sounded to me like the company wasn't the problem, it was the agency that f*cked up (a common occurance!).

OP - I don't know what you would want to do about this, it's really not your problem. It's up to the company you've got the job with to take things further about how the agency messed them around. They're the ones paying the agency for a service, not you.

Thanks for the replies. It's the agency i'm really annoyed with as the girl in there is just really incompetent. I know it's only a small thing but just the way she said she posted contract on Tuesday when she actually (more than likely) posted it on Thursday is p*ssing off! Anyway, i'm going to take the job as it's something which will be relevant to my masters. It's only 7 months and it's not as if i'm there for the rest of my life.

It's the agency and it is typical.
Ultimately the vast amount of agents are totally unqualified gombeens with no skillset whatsoever - never mind communication and organisation.

    best of luck with job
