I just got the last of my shots yesterday..
    Here's what i got:
    • Yellow Fever
    • Typhoid Fever
    • Dip/Polio/Tetanus
    • Hepatitis A
It came to €145 and i got prescription for malaria tabs and the vacc. book too

Don't bother with Hep B. It's a blood disease passed through bodily fluids like HIV. Only get it if you plan to have unsafe sex with the locals.

Rabies - what a rip! This Rabies vaccine actually only buys you time if bitten. If you get bitten in a remote area it just gives you a day to get to the hospital - your still in trouble..

But i suppose if you have the money.. Personally I wouldn't bother ( and i plan on volunteering in an animal refuge - they've all been quarantined anyway) Just run away if you see a scruffy dog with mange - run like the wind!

I'd say fcuk the TMB and go with a local GP.
Also i know someone who is out in SEA and got Typoid Fever despite getting the shots.

id get the hep b, at least if you get it you cant get the disease and its spread easier than hiv. seriously if you could get a vaccine against hiv you would so dont treat hep b any different!

as for rabies, its a complete rip, the tmb just try and sell it to you, dont bother, as flynn says it just buys you a little time and you still need to reach a doctor! plus the chances of getting bitten are pretty slim.

I got all those shots and more for my trips. Most of them however last 10 years+ (some need a booster).

To be honest, how can you put a value on your health? It's well worth paying in my opinion - you never know what situations you'll get yourself into ......

    That is outrageously stupid advice.

We should have a sticky in this forum that states this.

What happens if you're in a road accident - end up in hospital and they give you a blood transfusion?! Happens more than you think.

I sure as hell don't want to take that chance - although it's your body, do what you like.

Yeah i know, but the OP was looking for a way to cut costs - i had been to the doc that day and that is what he told me. I think the OP knows the more vaccs you get the better - he was just looking for a second opinion..
Look, the same goes for anything - not many people will get the rabies jab - as rare as it is to get bitten your still taking a chance.. not many people will get the Japanese encephalitis jab - you're still taking a risk.
Getting on the plane - your taking a risk.
    etc. etc.

Yes but the risk of contracting hep B is significantly higher than Japanese Encephalitis. TMB woman told me that only really happens to people who are around pigs for an extended period of time. And I'm pretty sure the rabies jab only gives you more time to get to a hospital, it doesn't give immunity.

Does anyone know if its cheaper to go TMB or your local GP? I'm going to a lot of places in southern and eastern Africa and from looking at the TMB the Vaccines are going to cost well over €300
Also when is best to go looking to get the jabs?

I'm thinking of just fecking off in the next two weeks and will probably be visiting Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru.

How far in advance would I need these vaccines anyone know?

And would these vaccines above be likely to cover me? (I wouldnt mind getting the hep b but it seems a long drawn out vaccination process and I dont have much time.)

TMB is the most expensive place to get the shots.

They're all very necessary, except rabies really. It just gives you extra time to get to a hospital, but don't be under the impression that it stops you getting rabies altogether.

OP I'd get all the ones you listed and leave it at that but I don't think we know where you are actually going? In any case the Scottish NHS run a very useful travel medicine website which gives maps on what jabs are important for each country, google it.

I'd be avoiding that Japanese encephalitis jab though if you need to save money. AFAIR when I checked it out in 2004 all of 16 people has died from it worldwide and it is only catchable in very small pockets in the world from a certain breed of mossie. Its a TMB scam IMO but check it out yourself.

Rabies jabs do only cover you till you get to a hospital but nonetheless I would get one. I've been on many treks where there has been rabid wild dogs hanging about and if any one of them bit me I would be real glad of that extra 24hrs.

Personally, I wouldn't bother getting a yellow fever shot unless you plan to go to a country where it's mandatory to enter. It is a lethal disease, but bar a few west African countries, transmission rates are not worth considering any more.

The two essential ones are multi-jab and typhoid

I got a couple of Boosts this morning in TMB......Makes sense to have all these, They're exactly what you need - Did ya listen when she was explaining what they were for ? :p

Cheaper to get done in your local doctor but mines a bit dodgy so fcuk that!

Better to be safe than sorry, It's your own Health and not much compared to what you'll spend over all so why budget on that of all things:pac:
