    Hey Guys ! :)

Ok, I need to get my hands on a lovely iPhone.

After playing around with a mates, I am convinced

I'm looking at buying one online from eBay.com....

Question > If I buy one from someone in the USA and get it shipped over here will I have to pay import duty / customs tax / vat etc.. ?

If so, is there anyway I can get item marked as a GIFT to bypass this ?

Unfortunately, I am not able to travel over to the US and I do not have any relatives living over there so thats why I have resorted to eBay :)

Any help is greatly appreciated guys :)

    Thanks again, can't wait ;)

What do you honestly think? It's a tax. It's compulsory. Tax evasion is against the law.

This thread should really go in the online buying section.

Yes. Vat plus a fairly small clearance charge if it's shipped through the postal service.

If it's shipped by UPS they will probably demand a disproportionately large clearance fee. Other courier companies may attempt to take advantage as well.

Since that's illegal, asking about it here is against the rules.

If a seller forgets to declare the full value then you may end up paying less duty, or perhaps even none at all. If the value is underdeclared however in the even of damage in transit or it going 'missing' you're going to be out of pocket.

The iphone is a pretty high profile item, and even if somebody with light fingers doesn't help themselves, there's a good chance somebody in customs will have a good idea of what it actually costs.

Have you looked at buying one from within the EU?
