How noisy is the UPC/NTL DVR?

I've seen mentioned in a couple of posts that the DVR from UPC can be noisy. How noisy are we talking? I can't abide hearing fan-noise in the background. The PS3 is about tolerable; I have the 40gb model which apparently is the quietest of all the SKUs.
The pace box I have at the moment is completely silent and while I'd like the DVR fuctionality I wouldn't be able to put up with background noise.
I know it's hard to describe volume, but if I have the tv muted am I going to hear the DVR box from a distance of 6 feet?

Some times you can hear disk read access. That is all. Anyone who thinks it is noisy can probably hear (not read) the suffering in Darfur.

Mine is virtually silent . DVD makes more noise.

If I mute the TV and I can certainly hear the fan from about 8 feet away.

If the TV is off and the box is on I would be able to hear the fan from the DVR. If the TV is on then the DVR noise isn't noticable to me. I find the noise level to be the same for my Xbox (original) and my Toshiba HDD/DVD recorder.

    Same here...

My DVR hasn't a patch on the noise from the Xbox.

hmm, worries me a bit. I had the original xbox and to me it was very noisy.

Thanks for the feedback folks. I want to be 100% sure about this before I order one. From past experience life is a lot easier the less you have to deal directly with NTL.

When I got mine I thought it was louder than the old box (which was silent). I don't even notice it now. I've had my xbox for 2 years and I still think that is too loud (considering getting an Elite as it's meant to be quieter). It really is nothing like the Xbox noise wise IMO.

Had one of these DVRs since day one. You can hear the drive a bit but it's nowhere near as noisy as say a fan on a pc/ps/xbox. Personally I can't hear it above the TV when it's on.

    I am surprised by this.
My DVR does not make any noise at all. It's completely silent.
Have double checked by muting surround sound and I just hear nothing from the DVR.
I wonder if people the people with the noisy units should contact UPC about it.

As already mentioned, the Xbox 360 is very noisey, but I don't hear it with TV sound on and also, what about that noise that comes from an old VCR and no one complained about that!

I only really notice the noise from it when everything else is switched off... then there's a clear fan sound (in a small room) but it wouldn't be comparable to the noise of my Xbox (original), laptop or Wii.

The most annoying thing is the disc read noise, which only happens from time to time. Oddly enough the machine has a tendency to make this noise about 5 minutes after you put it into standby, so if you turn it off and then turn over to go asleep it might interrupt you!

It can also depend on the hard drive included - you can even get different levels of noise even if they are the same model of drive.

I can just about hear my Sky+ box with the TV on mute when it's recording (I assume it's the fan).

The Wii makes a bit of a racket during gaming, otherwise it's silent.

A friends PS3 can be heard whirring away the whole time - that would drive me nuts!

I am getting this constant buzzing sound from my DVR as it is in the background of programme not from the machine itself. I thought it was my new TV at first but played a DVD and no background noise. When I mute it there is no noise. Changed the AV connections at the back and no difference so it is definetly coming from the DVR- anyone else have this problem - how did they resolve it?
