Seems pretty good for the money - 3GB of RAM and a graphics card with its own memory. I don't think it'll be much for playing games if that's what you want out of it though. The CPU is on the low end of the Core 2 Duo scale but it probably consumes less power than the faster ones.

edit: oh wait a minute, its not a Core 2 Duo apparently. The Intel T2330 is a pentium of some kind. Not sure now.

Looks like a good deal to the uninitiated - can anyone recommend a better deal for a similiar laptop?

    Thanks

How good are the 3 year warranties. In 30 months if it dies, do you get a replacement or your money back?

    Might be tempted.

Dell vostro people, i speced up a laptop for just over €700, with double that spec. The machine i speced had: t7250 core 2 duo processor 2.0ghz
    3gig of ram
    250gig harddrive
    nvidia 8400ms
    1 year dell warrenty
    9 cell battery
    upgraded 14.1 inch screen
the processor in the aldi machine is dated, the core 2 duo far out performs it. bigger hd, better graphics, better screen, dell build quality,

Has the Vostro HDMI out and a TV Tuner + remote? That's rather handy. I've seen the insides of some of the other Aldi machines (Medion desktops) and I was impressed with it. Brother had 2 of them on the trot and they never gave any trouble.

    It's certainly tempting.

Would not be using that as a selling point tbh. Dell's build quality is average.

And medion's is first class???? the medions are apparently awful quality, i'd go with a dell quality machine over a medion every time. Dell is better than medion, simple as that.

It seems decent enough value. The extras really do add to it though. The e-sata port is pretty sweet.

Isn't the Vostro from Dell for Businesses only !!!!

Or does somebody know how to get it for ordinary people?

I bought a laptop from them last year, it calved after 2 months. They wanted to send it back for repair but I demanded my money back, really had to stand my ground and basically argue with the manager to get it.

Bought a Vostro then, can't fault it.

The CPU is awful though. It basically undermines the rest of the spec.

Well it must be me doing something wrong then because when I go to the checkout with my Vostro set-up on the Dell website it asks me for my BUSINESS address?

No, I'm perfectly capable, but with that spec the price is just under 850, not 700. Fair difference, and if it's possible he used some vouchers or something I'd probably get one for myself. Is that ok with you or do I need to justify my posts further to His Majesty?

Agreed, and for this reason it is not a BA.

Just put in your normal address. They won't care. I've ordered two of the things, no questions asked.

No worries, that rather sarcastic post wasn't directed at you, but at the other guy that seemed to have a problem with my question.

Thanks for that, it's a great spec for the price alright. I also assumed when you said upgraded 14.1" TFT that you meant the max upgrade with the higher res.

Are there likely to be any coupons going for this, or do they only apply to the items under the Home section of laptops?

Important thing about laptops: they break and repairs are expensive. That's why a 3-year warranty is necessary. Aldi has it ;), Vostro does not (at that price).

Okay, so you're willing to take the chance that your aldi "3 year warrenty" will actually be worth anything, what will it cover? Personally if it was a warranty i was after i would just reduce some of the spec on the vostro, still keeping it better than the aldi machine, ie reduce the processor to a 1.8 core 2 duo and get the 3 year next business day warranty with the dell.

I had said nothing about Medion's build quality, only Dell's. Dell are horribly overrated, with a very average build quality for a brand that likes to promote itself as a premium brand. I have worked with both Dell and Hewlett Packard, in Ireland and Germany, and the difference in build quality is staggering. All Dell have here is a very basic line build done by people with little or no knowledge of what they are doing, with a poor QA system at the end.

HP have a much more stringent QA system, and far better trained people involved at build level. Sony are another company whose build quality in laptops eclipses Dell.

So as for Dell being a better build quality over the Medion? Dell advertises better would be my response. I have plenty of experience taking Dells apart and have the chance to pick apart a number of Medions, and there is not an awful lot between them in terms of build quality euro for euro. Dell may be the bigger name, but in terms of build quality, they are much closer to the Medions of this world than the HPs.

Important thing about laptops: they need to work consistently, my Medion didn't. The Vostro does.

Also my cust. service experiences with Dell over the last 6 years far eclipse my cust. service experience with Aldi/Medion. Completely rubbish tech support and grumpy store managers who only react once you quote legislation.

The CPU is not awful as previously stated.

The 9300M is not inferior to the 8400 as previously stated, it's the same.

The laptop is excellent value for money considering the extras, and the features of the laptop itself....esata, hdmi, etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,916 ✭✭✭podgeandrodge

Have a medion pc - and when i needed the support they (medion helpline) sent someone out to my house to fix it.. no complaints and glad of the 3 year warranty.

That, together with 3 gigs ram, DVB-T Tuner and HDMI out make it a more interesting proposition than the DELL imo.

edit...ok dual core vs core 2 duo....don't know enough about the difference to qualify me to make comments!
