Yeah but, say, hypothetically, someone, say, had a load of money at their disposal and wanted one for, say, the bling factor and to behead zombies or whatever.....

I would really, really like to play about with one personally, just to have a look.

And perhaps they have a lot of empty manila envelopes lying about the place.

Yeah, I did want one, but didn't want to pay all that for one.... then I saw the customised ones, and I think I want a black one with an orange apple, solely for looking all blinged out in Starbucks with my venti latte and my iPhone and my blinged out Air.

Then I realised they start at more money than I spent on my last car.
And perhaps they have a lot of empty manila envelopes lying about the place.

Which I just so happen to have. 1500, at last count.

I know that O2 experience places are getting theirs next week, but apparently some of the business resellers have them it seems. Someone from Stream I.T. solutions in good ol' Cork claimed to have 2 MBA for demo, non SSD models though, from tomorrow onwards. I haven't seen them with my own eyes though so I can't confirm. I wrote a mini review of my first hand impressions in the laptop forum's MBA thread a few weeks back.

The g/f got one in the states over the weekend.
The sales people really sold it as a secondary machine,
going into detail about lack of ports, drives, and everything being non-removable.

They are super-sexy. So damn small and light.
My Macbook feels like a clunky monster in comparison.

Backlit keys are deadly in low-light.
Multi-touch pad is a nice but didn't seem to have too many practical applications for anything I'd played around with it for.

No massive performance difference with my Macbook(2.0Ghz,2GB Ram,120HD) for internets, some big-ish Reason4 projects and basic Photoshopping.

i think the spectra beside o'connell street has them on display. Sorry i'm not too familiar with street names. I saw one guy buying the first one in the shop. It looked surprisingly fast. There was not much waiting for applications to load. It is one sexy laptop. You have to see how thin it is to believe it. They don't have the superdrives in yet though.

I really can't seem to justify paying 2,878 base for a 13inch 1.8. Espically when i'm currently on my MBP that cost me 1,899.

    Got to agree with you.

It is not a production machine but is a hell of a fashion accessory. I would not be a great lover of form over function but i find it hard not to describe it as beautiful.

The pricier model has a solid state hard drive, and not a standard drive; hence it being dearer. It is far more robust and tough and will be de rigeur in notebooks in about 5-6 years time, once prices drop.

Who's asking you to justify it? If you're already using a MBP it's clear that the Air is not a machine that's targeted towards you. People seem to be of the opinion that the Air is supposed to be a super computer, but all it's supposed to be is a travel orientated/fashion machine.

have played around with one in the apple store in Glasgow and have to say it is super impressive. Love the black, backlit keys and can see them being the new thing on MBP's Very slim and light but i did find the skinny trackpad button to be a bit of a pain and it felt a bit flimsy and cheap. (the button that is) Liked the big trackpad but found that even with minimal movment on the table the magsafe kept popping out. Its a redesign but seems to be awkwardly placed.

I have read some worrying technical issues on the web also and some were on the apple website but have ben pulled. Things such as one of the processor core's shutting down due to poor heat management and such. Not sure if these are isolated things but it would make me wait for rev b if i were thinking of buying...which i'm not. I did really like it and can see the asthetic appeal...but its not as powerful as a Macbook, let alone a pro and i would bet it turns out not to be as portable as one either. It just felt too special and not robust enough to fling in a backpack. Which you can do with macbook. I also use macbook as portable movie machine when i'm traveling, which it also would not be suitable for. I guess i just can't see the real use for it. Except as a letter writing, web browsing machine.

I think this will end up being a niche or halo product to be honest. I don't see it selling in huge numbers. The macbook and MBP will still be the mainstays. However i think it points to future design cues and also will pave the way for things like, large TP and multitouch on future Macbooks, ssd option on MBP to run system while HD holds Data, and i would guess the disk sharing thing will become a feature on all portables.

Another guess is that the chipset developed for the machine could also find its way into a more portable super PDA or mini tablet with full multitouch. Its been much talked about on other sites as the evolution of the iphone interface, and this small but powerful chipset would set such a product apart from the current marked.
