Hey guys, I've had an acoustic for a while but I want to get myself an electric guitar now. I want to play the likes of Oasis etc. Any tips on the brand/model of guitar I should buy. I've been looking at a few Epiphone Les Paul copys, is this the road I should go down? I have a Marshall AVT50X amp already.

Depends on your budget of course.

If i don't mention the Yamaha Pacifica, i will get crucified here. Good all rounder.

You can get Epiphone Les Paul's second hand for about €250 or less.
I started off with one and no complaints with it for the cash they cost. Keep you going untill you upgrade.

Thenks Darren, yeah I've heard of the pacifica alright but they're a strat-style guitar aren't they? What type of guitar is best for the kind of sound I'm after?

I think a semi-hollowbody guitar would get closer to that kinda sound. Maybe an Epiphone Dot, Epiphone Casino or even Ibanez Artcore. :)

Afaik one of the guys in Oasis has an Epiphone signature guitar too. But it has a union jack on the front. :o

i was looking at one of those ibanez artcores as well, did plenty of research on it(harmony central and the like)and it sounds great.the one i am going for is the ag 75(i think they work out at about 350 euros from thomann)check them out on utube(plenty of guys on there giving demos on them)

i could be wrong, but i thought Oasis did use Epiphone guitars in the early years. Their first record was supposed to recorded with Epiphone's because they had a deal with them.

Definatley, they use Epiphone guitars in one of their early videos. i fink it was 'Supersonic'...mad for it:D

There was a Noel Gallagher signature Epiphone Semi with Union jack flag on it.
Maybe you could wear the of the surface and spray on a tri-colour or something.....couldn't resist that one.:D

yup, go for either a les paul or emi hollowbody as mentioned before to get that sound. Id lean more to a hollowbody though especially if your used to playing acoustic. Theres a small company out there called peerless who make sexy hollobodys on the cheap. Played a freinds one the last day for the first time and i fell in love instantly.

Thanks guys, I'm really leaning towards a Les Paul because I love the look of it but I like the likes of the Epi Dot too. I'm having a tough time deciding really. I've around 550-600 euro to spend, any recommendations in particular? Guitars are cheap from the uk at the moment since sterling is weak. Was looking at a few on www.dolphinmusic.co.uk

Cheers mate, I know of thomann but alot of the guitars are actually cheaper from the UK right now due to the weak pound. One example:

    Dolphin Music: €493
    Thomann.de: €649

Noel G has always been an Epi man if I remember correctly. Used LPs back in the day. Got the signature semi for Cad é an Sceal - Maidin Glory (dunno glory in Irish, feck)

I have an Epi LP and I love it. Upgraded the pickups after a year to Seymore Duncan JB4 and '59. Now tis a monster.

Couldn't recommend it highly enough for the moolah.

Well Don do you play any oasis? How is the lp for that kind of music?

Not so much Oasis, but it's a great shouty rock guitar imo. Not to fizzy. Just a good honest chunky sound. Perfect for Oasis tbh. Just go straight into the amp and crank it to 11!!! The Marshall should give a decent enough stab at the sound too.

Give one a spin in a music shop to see how it feels. Make sure and get a similar amp though. Also ask if you can whack the volume up a bit to a volume that'd you'd be using as the voicing of the amp will be different at a low volume.

Still, I reckon it's the right choice in the price bracket.
