Buying a Double Bass

I'm looking to buy a double bass in the very near future. I can dish out around 2k on it. So, recommendations! I'm willing (and will probably have to) buy on line (due to the poor selection in Waltons/Mccullough Pigotts). I'm looking for something that can be used for classical and jazz. I don't really know about variation between double basses, but I've read that some are more geared toward rockabilly and the sort.

Yeah, you get the picture: 2k good double bass. Which and where to get.

    Thanks

    Dan

Theres a shop in Glasnevin that sells them, can't remember the name but if you google it you'll find it. :)

Okay, what I have learned from talkbass.com (thanks a bunch for the link):

    - Buying online = bad idea
    - Finding good luthier for advice = good idea

I don't know any luthiers though...

I was thinking of getting a double bass awhile back (albeit a cheapish one for messing about) and people suggested loads of places. Do an aul search and you should find the thread. Didn't get it in the end, faced major space issue :(

Great service and great service....what more do you want. I won't go on. PM me if you want more info or just go to the shop and ask.

kawaii has the right idea I think. Most people in the shop I work in go for 3/4 size because they are a lot more managable. I suggest you have a chat with a few double bass teachers before ordering something, even if you have no intention of getting lessons ;)

Yeah, I'm doing music in college so I should surely be able to get some advice! 3/4 size seems like the sane option alright.

Frankiestylee, I'll search for that thread now...

    Thanks all!

I checked that thread there. People seemed to just suggest loads of Crehan's. I'll definitely pop my head in in the the near future. I'll read up on talkbass for things I should be looking for aswell.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll let you's know if this comes to fruition.
