Setanta Sports Price Hike

Noticed yesterday that my Setanta (by satellite) subscription has gone up from €18 p/m to €19.99 with no notification.

Has anyone else noticed this, or did anyone else get a letter to say prices were going up? I called them yesterday to cancel the subscription because...
    1) I was incredibly annoyed at the increase and lack of information.... and
    2) Sky Sports show most of the matches I want anyway.

The woman on the phone was really helpful in fairness and when I told her what happened, she couldn't believe it and said she wasn't aware the prices had gone up either.

I was gonna cancel until she offered me the the subscription for €9.99 til the end of the Premierleague season so at least I can see that out.... but, still very annoyed.

with a 50% reduction I would be quite pleased, might even try it myself :D

The feckers- I've been hit too ( my thanks to OP for pointing this out)

I'll be on the phone to them tonight. Probably in the small print somewhere, but unannounced price rises are just pure cheek.
More so for the privilege of getting to watch Northampton vs Airbus 5 times a week.

    Grrrrr

A deal like the OP got would be cool though!

The deal I got was good, BUT only 'cos I was cancelling and it's only to get me through til the end of the season. Woman on the phone was gas though, from Sunderland and was asking why I didn't support them... Mad I tell ya!!

It's bad form though, I know it's on €1.99 increase, but it's the fact it's unannounced and they just took the money from my credit card!

They might reduce it now that they didn't spend 20 million on bog ball

Highly unlikely they'll reduce it without bog ball and muck stick... They''ll see people will just pay extra, so why reduce the subscription.

Look at Aer Lingus... They still charge fuel surcharges and the price has dropped since they started them.

Plus, the price hike only came into effect this January, so it's not going to drop so soon.

A couple of people at the start of this season have told me that they were not informed that their sub with Setana was up, but the good people at Setanta automatically debited their credit cards for another year. Did this happen anyone else who paid annually?

Yup, happened to us. We knew our sub was running out, when we went to cancel it turned out they had already taken the money from credit card (the day before!!!). And annoying thing was we were debited 1 day early, (i.e. we ordered on say the 2nd of month 2006, and then on the 1st of month 2007 money was taken for year 2)

Nothing we could do apparently, so we have told them already (i think) that we are cancelling as soon as year is up...

Appartently the credit credit company wanted nothing to do with it, I though CC companies would offer more protection than this. Either way it is sneaky and has put alot of people I know off Setanta.

Me four and they outlined all the additional reasons for the increase, the LFC and Arsenal channels, buying the rights to UFC from July and a few other things its only and extra €1.99 anyway. Sky put my package up €2 3 or 4 months back and I still havent gotten anything from them saying it was being increased.

Well that bit is not unusual. Your existing contact was from 2nd to the end of the 1st the following year. As with most subscription services, they are pre-paid, so they had to take money BEFORE the start of your next term (which they sound like they did).

The sneaky bit is the rolling 12-month contract, rather than a 12-month initial term and rolling monthly contract (as with, say, most telco providers). That's extremely misleading, especially given that they operate rolling monthly contracts (with 1 month initial term) now. If you have a copy of the T&C from when you signed up, just be sure about that it is a rolling 12-month contract (the CS agent COULD be wrong!).

Companies cannot hang onto your credit card details without expressed permission, would check to see if this is covered in the contract aswell.

There are long threads on avforums about how setanta treat their customers. NTL-like.

Nowt wrong with holding on to them for a recurring subscription.

They have to get permission thou, but I'm sure it is buried in the small print. There are alot more options than Setanta, cheaper too.

sky sports and setanta sports are a rip off and the owners

if every subscription viewer cancelled its contract, all the sports which are on sky sports and setanta sports would be made available to everyone

Ignoring your potentially libellous statement, could you please explain how the sports would be available to everyone?

Just like how they were before Sky Sports? You wouldn't by any chance be related to another Keith that used to visit these boards a while back. Similar attitude to pay tv.

    Well low and behold..
Despite giving them the one months notice last january, they billed me again..

And guess what, they had me on hold now for 10 mins only to tell me that my a/c was still active and no cancelation note or nothing.

I had a record of the time and date and who Ispoke to at setanta back in january so they say that call would have been recorded...

Meantime They say that theres no option but for them to take the €19.99 again in march and restart a one months notice period.

they said I can write to some address in scotland for a refund :mad::rolleyes::rolleyes:

What do ye think of that??

Are Setanta like the Ryanair of Satellite TV Channels... Well, At least you're guaranteed a seat with Setanta, all be it in your own home!

I for one will certainly be cancelling when my "cheap" offer runs out, and would not recommend them to anyone. The way they treat their customers is terrible.

If you pay by CC, can ya not get onto your CC company and get them to block any future payments to Setanta as you've cancelled, yet they still continue to steal money off you?

I'll be contacting the credit card co tomorrow.
I might ask them to do a charge back if possible.

I've no time for dodgy tactics like this.
    It's very bad business practice.
