What's their definition of a professional photographer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

Good question. I would assume it means someone who makes a living from photography.

It's very general and doesn't specify.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

Normally for competitions it states that anyone who derives over 50% of their income from photography is a "professional" photographer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

Hmm...time to bring out the Nikon D3 cameras....

I've looked at the T&Cs and there's isn't any mention that the winner has to take the pictures with a Canon camera (in fact in registration they state this is optional).

Wouldn't it be great if an Olympus/Pentax/Nikon/Sony shooter won the comp? :D

edit: or better yet, a film shooter wins :p

Now I can tell the missis I'm "on assignment" when I feck off for the day! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

And you can submit 1 entry per category. Hmm. I must browse through my sports images, and then think about landscape, macro and portrait. Time to get practicing until the competition opens.

Would that not be still life rather than portrait? I would have assumed that portrait would be people shots.

ah gotcha, I'm not too sure on the whole different types (still/portrait) for photo's :)

Sounds good,I might give it a go too.It seems we're categorised as being in the same country as U.K, as if Ireland wasn't tough enough now we have to compete with all the U.K photographers too

When I was your age I was lucky to even HAVE a photographic device.

And even that used something called "film" and needed a laboratory to process it... Damn 1990's...!

Yes, and then you get to buy yourself lots of nice Canon gear and be shown the error of your ways! :D

From what I could understand, you could only enter one photo? Non?

    Yeah, that's my understanding.

BTW is there a moratorium on the usual Intellectual Property discussion?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

They own all the photos for 2 years (basically):

    4
    Intellectual Property Rights

    4.1
    Licenses

    4.1.1
Any User expressly agrees that by entering into the Competition (whether national Competition or the Assignment), he/she automatically grants to Canon and its affiliates the non-exclusive, free of charge and royalty-free right to sub-license, use, reproduce and/or display in any format and support any Photograph that he/she uploads on this Website or, if relevant, that he/she takes during the Assignment, for the purpose of supporting and promoting internally and externally on the Internet and in Europe Middle East and Africa for a period of two years from the date of entering the Competition:

    1. this Competition;
    2. the results of this Competition; and
    3. Canon’s and its affiliates support of the photography and imaging industry and community, including but not limited through possible events (including exhibitions and corporate events), presentations, making-of movies, video-clips and publications (including Internet and press publications).

    - emphasis added - you're giving them permission to allow themselves and others they approve of to use the image in whatever way they feel is appropriate. So in effect you are giving them the image (you can still license to others though).

Correct. I misread it the first time, and thought it was limited to one entry per category, rather than one entry for one category.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

    Shame!

Right... Lets get sorting... What would win, that I potentially don't need for 2 years...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

They only want non-exclusive rights, so you can still use the photo yourself, for your own needs.

I must admit, the prizes don't excite me either. Then again, a 2nd 40D (3rd body) might be useful. I'd prefer either a 5D or maybe even put the value towards a new lens or something.

Bear in mind that you can always sell the gear on :)

its gotta be digital and canon right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

They did not make reference to either the digital medium nor Canon equipment in their terms and conditions.

In fact you are told that owning a Canon dSLR is optional during registration.
