I was there last year and found it worthwhile. I think it's probably a good idea to know what you want to get out if it before you go. It's unbelieveably big, going for less than two days probably isn't worthwhile. You can't actually buy instruments or equipment at the fair, you can place orders but this is more often than not aimed at retailers and suppliers rather than individual consumers. The equipment on display by chinese manufacturers is a real oppurtunity to pick up some bargains especially if you're buying a few microphones. The lighting rigs there are outrageous! More instruments than I've ever seen in one place.
There are seminars (a few in English) throughout the week and there's a lot of gigs on there, showcasing different types of euipment. If you get friendly enough with some of the people displaying gear there, you might be able to get in to the after hours events that aren't open to the public. There are also concerts and events run by different companies on around Frankfurt, Roalnd put on a pretty good one last year, but all these events are to advertise and display the relevant companies gear. If you approach it right you can really learn things from a visit there. In saying all that, I'm not going this year but I do think I might go again in the next few years, depending on my needs and situation.
If you're serious about going and want to get something from it, sign up for their newsletter and try to plan out what you want to do. The actual size of the event will probably still be a shock.
Anything specific you wanted to know?
