Just wondering which version of Linux is best for the PS3? I've heard of yellowdog but have seen fedora mentioned as well. So I'm kind of confused as to what to get.

    dont forget PSubuntu!!!

i was thinking about this when i got my PS3 as well but then i realised i dont really need it. what bonus is there? i have a laptop for everything i need. and the ps3 for the games

Currently Yellowdog is the one to get , its optimised for the PS3 and everything works from the start , its based on Fedora , but if you try fedora or any other linux install you will have trouble with the wireless drivers at least!

PSubuntu seems to be stalled in developement at the moment , only 3 people on the project and no posts since november , so expect trouble if you try that one.

    http://psubuntu.com/

I installed yellow dog when I got my console , mainly to use as a media player , since Ive done that though , upgrades arrived thick and fast for the console and it now plays anything I wanted it too directly from the main menu , so , as a " see if I can " exercise its interesting enough , but otherwise a fairly pointless install to be honest !

Unless of course you have a special project in mind.

The main reason I wanted to get it is for the drivers for the Xbox 360 controller, I hate the PS3 one.

Well it won't let you use the 360 controller in PS3 games, it will only work in linux.

Yellow Dog 6 is out now, and will be on the free links early in march, I'd imagine that will be the one to go for when it's out.

I did it. Not sure why tbh, just an experiment really. Installed YDL and a few nice apps, mostly for media.

I have a number of files that the PS3 won't play but VLC works a charm.

Overall, I wouldn't unless you are feeling bored...

when you install YDL is there much hassle getting media players installed? i have the problem that only about half my 500GB HDD of video will play on the PS3. gets kinda annoying. if installing YDL and getting something line VLC viewer on there was easy enough then i might give it a go.

Installing VLC is easy enough , there are media players already in the distro that may be good enough. But VLC is certainly possible , I did it myself.
