I don't mind Tubridy really but his gags are pretty lame.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,722 ✭✭✭anotherlostie

I must say the presentation is very classy - up there with the BAFTA's and not what I would expect for RTE.

Tubridy is pretty awful, but dealing with bad material written for him.

now THIS is how to put on a show!

who needs the Oscars when we have this quality right in our own back yard!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,005 ✭✭✭✭Toto Wolfcastle

Forget about Tubridy, he's always awkward in these situations. The real star is Colin Farell. What a charmer!

Also, Jonathan Rhys Meyrs, where did you get that accent?

So far I'm enjoying the show.

Apart from calling Saoirse Ronan, Saoirse Ryan.:D

I think RTE have nicked last year's Oscar's music when announcing the nominations.

Jane Wisener is presenting an award sponsored by Pantene. Oooh I'd like to kiss er!

Now Pat Kenny and Tuberdy on stage together. Surely two black holes so close together will cause some sort of quantum fluctuation?

Tubridy looks like he needs to go to the toilet he is jittering all about the place.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers has a pair of Bono heels on him.

In fairness to him, he did run after the granny and grandad when they went the wrong way!

As for the music, I'm pretty sure it is the same as last years IFTAs, but also very Oscar-esque!

Putting it on in the Gaeity was a great idea, it's much more professional.

I love that Tall, Dark and O hAilpin won, it was a great show.

Whats up with the audience, unresponsive to say the least. Should have given them a lot more free gargle.

I don't know I think Tubridy is a good presenter. Comes across very confident unlike Pat.

Missed Rhys Meyers. What was his accent like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭Mrs. D'arcy

Accent was very posh almost english sounding...not a bit of cork in it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,005 ✭✭✭✭Toto Wolfcastle

Who else thinks that Mel Gibson is bored sh*tless? He's probably only heard of about 4 people in the whole place, and he obviously wont get any of the 'in' jokes.

Kathryn Thomas got very emotional altogether! It's just a competition to see who has the best campaign really. I though Julian should have won, even though I don't really know what he does.

I wouldn't mind it not having a bit of Cork in it. He's from the same area as me and I haven't got a bit of Cork in my accent. (I'm told this everyday!) I was just expecting him to sound a bit Irish! I suppose it's the Tudors' influence.

Can't take that award seriously since Mark Cagney won it a couple of years ago.

    Hey it's Johnny Drama!

    English.

Starting to drag the arse out of it now. They must have handed out 30 awards already. Everyone in the audience must be getting one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 155 ✭✭Beechman

This is really a bad show, could they not stage it in the RDS and put a bit of class into it,

I agree they should have given the guests a lot more drink, except for Mel Gibson and wake them all up!

They bring over a top Hollywood actor and have him be part of a cr*p production and don't get me started about the presenter !!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,940 ✭✭✭dingding

Some of the acceptance speeches are startnig to drag on a bit, Hallie would not have a look in.:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,551 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

I think the production values are pretty good but it's just a boring show. The crowd seem comatose. Somebody needs to break out the charlie or something.

Hopefully Mel Gibson might go on the rampage to liven it up a little.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,940 ✭✭✭dingding

Camera panned onto Mel, he looks bored stiff.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,546 ✭✭✭Enii

I think the stick insect presenting the show is the main problem with it. He is just so goddam*ed offensively ugly. Not something you want to be looking out. He should stick to the radio.

I was hoping Graiine Seoige would be presenting him with his award so he could call her "sugar tits".

    +1 :d

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,005 ✭✭✭✭Toto Wolfcastle

I think they got the order wrong.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers and his funny accent
Colin Farell talks to old people
    Boring
    Boring
    Boring
    Pat Shortt can't stop laughing
    Boring
    Boring
    Boring
    And so on
    Mel Gibson
Ryan Tubridy tries to close the show, and fails.

It just doesn't scream entertainment to me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 156 ✭✭Deflector

Direction of show was rather stodgy, the typically conservative style of David Donaghy.
Not necessarily a bad thing - he does solid work - but nearly two hours of the same shots gets tiring to say the least.

Lighting of auditorium was poor, and stage entrance sequences very badly cheorographed.

Great graphics though, and Tubridy okay with some odd quirks.

was it just me or did you find the use of the same music cuts over and over and over...............woefully annoying??

Tubridy's performance on the autocue reminded me of when someone put the question mark at the end of the script in Anchorman.

    My thoughts:
The production, set and music was nice and classy.
Tubridy was pure nervous. His demeanour and posture screamed amateur. His 'witty' comments and 'funny' jokes fell flat. I think even he knew it. The audience wasn't responsive.
I was also wondering where's the stage chaperone to lead award presenters and winners off the stage. Tubridy had to do it and it looked unprofessional.

I also think there should be more Irish / Hollywood celebrities and people of note attending these awards. The fact there isn't speaks volumes.
Though getting Mel Gibson and Colin Farrell is quite a coup.
But it's not really enough to warrant watching a 2 hr awards ceremony where the majority of winners collecting awards are production staff or little-known actors.

I didn't notice Rhys-Meyers accent I thought he looked terrible though, like he hadn't slept in ages

ya, rhys myers looked desperate, he was sweatin near d end der, he made tubridy look good! I was sure i seen the lad from prison break on the red carpet at the begining, i musta missed him in the show tho, did he present? I was not great, but not as bad as de meteors...

a lot of the so-called stars looked a tad COKED UP!

    Esp Jonathan Rhys................

The most memorable thing for me was the state of Aisling O'Sullivan (Dr. Cathy from The Clinic). She looked as though she had just gotten out of the bath and pulled her (still wet) hair back, put on no slap and a sack of a dress.

For a woman who usually looks so stylish, I was surprised to see her not give a damn about her appearance!

Is tubridy the future of RTE? To think that useless wanker is sitting in the radio slot once occupied by the legend Gay Byrne.I've listened to Gay Byrne,Ryan Tubridy is NO Gay Byrne.

Absolutely agree. Fair enough if she didn't want to wear a long dress or whatever, but she was at a red carpet event! But fair play also for not feeling like she needed to.

I don't usually watch Tubridy but I caught the Bo Derek interview this week.
He was mortifying, he wasn't capable of paying her an ounce of attention.

    Is he usually like that?

    Think so...

Sometimes he seems to think his own 'witty' ramblings are more interesting than his guests.

His whole show makes me cringe - he's trying SOOOO HARD to be Conan O'Brien it's pathetic. That cityscape doesn't even resemble Dublin!

I'm beginning to think he's worse than Kenny 'cos he thinks he'sd a real kool kat...

I don't mind Tubridy most of the time. Compared to Kenny anyway. He does think he is a hipster and a lost member of the Rat Pack though.

just seen today podge and rodge won "best entertainment show",i think that says more about the competition than the integrity of the award.
    What other shows were nominated?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 142 ✭✭,mnb

Tubridy was awful with the 'gags'. They were like the Angus Deaton type jokes (who I cant stand anyone and I think the jokes are mainly ****) but they just didnt suit Tubridy in any way. The crowd could have been more lively though.
