Question about cover letters and cv

Im hoping to do a complete career change, though i wouldn't call what iv got a career. But im hoping to change jobs and hopefully getting a career out of the new job. Iv been thinking about this for a few months cause there would be a drop in my wages. Iv just really been in my own job for the money but to f*ck with money. Also been putting it of cause i have a fear of not getting what i want. But nothing is going to happen if i don't try. So im going for it now.
I'd rather have work i like doing. Im hoping for work as a veterinary assistant. As far as i know alot of vets take on people and train them as veterinary assistants, so i wouldn't need qualifications but i would love to go back to college and study veterinary nursing in the future.

Anyway i was just going to hand my cv into a few veterinary practices tomorrow, but then my sister was saying that i would have to have a cover letter even if i was to hand it in. I thought you just have a cover letter if you were to send it in the post. Can someone clear this up for me? Do u need a cover letter if u were to hand it in person?

She has also been saying that i would need a career objective, which i don't have one. When i was in school i wasn't told anything about career objectives.

Can some one help me on these issues. I don't want to make a balls of this. I really want to work with animals. Thanx

Well I would put in the cover letter anyway, purely from the point of view that you probably won't get to meet the vet in the practices you're going to visit. They will have appointments to keep and may not have time to speak to you. So you will need a cover letter to explain what you want. A random CV isn't going to make it clear what kind of work you want to do, especially if you have no experience with animals.

Yep, do definitely include a cover letter. As regards the career plan, just explain the type of work you hope to do ie vetinary assistant, and say that you would hope to go back to college to study vetinary nursing in the future. This will show that you are serious about a career in vetinary medicine and have thought about it properly.
