    Hi,

I need help, before I go insane. For some reason my Norton auto protect keeps turning off and I've tried all Norton's fix tools and symantec updates. I contaced them and did what they told me to do but it's still no good, I'm going to go insane soon if I don't get it fixed. My OS is Vista and have Norton 2007 Protection Centre. Could it be a virus. I saw a message just before this hapenned that a Trojan had been detected. Probably galloping into my PC !!!

    HELP HELP HELP :confused::confused::confused::confused:

Disable Norton and download Avira or AVG and do a system scan, they should pick up any trojans. If Norton still doesn't work after that, try a reinstall. To be honest though, I'd just get rid of Norton altogether after that. It's nothing but trouble in my experience.

I'm afraid to uninstall it as I downloaded the product key from the net when the free 2month period was up and I assume I'd need the key to reinstall it again. I have spybot and ran a full system scan from that as well, it did find some file threats but I don't think it was a virus. I'm so frustrated and I guess my PC is very unsafe with auto protect off. Damn you Norton !! Are those programs free to download that you mentioned and whats the easiest way to disable Norton coz I've heard they make it very tricky ??? :(

Just get rid of Norton, its rubbish and not only slows your pc down but doesn't work, Go with -annex-'s suggestion and get avira or AVG Free, both are better than the rubbish Norton...

    Do this

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
    • Close all other windows before proceeding.
    • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
    • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
    • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

the only way to successfuly remove Nortons is to use their own removal tool
which can be found here. .http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Thanks guys. I've been recommended by a friend in I.T. to downlaod Kaspersky antivirus as he reckons it's the best at the moment if the uninstall re-install attempt fails for Norton. Fingers crossed it'll work coz if it doesn't then it means I was a naeive moron for buying it in the first place :o.

Just to add, any system I've had to repair nearly always has Norton issues. When reselling or getting clients new PC's, I just uninstall Norton altogether regardless of free trial periods. It clogs memory and CPU usage. I always go with Avast & Spybot

agree with you on uninstalling Nortons on every machine i have come across. i use AVG , SpybotS&D and Spywareblaster

Spywareblaster puts a killbit in your browser which stops malicious code from running. its also regularly updated

I already have spyware bot on my PC just as sort of back-up to Norton but is that enough to have without Norton ? Sorry I'm not up to speed with all this virus protection, etc.:o

Heh, I have exactly the same issues with norton, and practically the same solution except with AVG instead of Avast. :D

Stop hijacking someone else's thread. Also, there was no need to create two seperate threads with the same text and THEN post it in here also.
