Just a simple query, does anyone know of a place in Dublin where I can find a laptop without an operating system installed ?
I intend to install Debian on such a laptop so I don't want any extra bloatware like Norton antivirus or Works 200* etc aswell.

Could you not order a custom built pc eg. dell (as opposed to pre-boxed tesco-type) laptop and just ask them not to install windows?

I had a look at the dell home website, but you can't specify if you want/need a different OS beyond windows xp and Vista.

Try giving them a call and talk to a salesperson. They probably work on some form of commission so will want to sort it out for you, if its at all possible. If they say no, ring another company!

are you doing it to save the lciensing fee or to avoid the trialware?

if its the latter all pcs, including dells, should be supplied with an os install disc - not a restore image.
there was a time when ms tried to encourage oems to save money buy not supplying os discs but this policy has generally been done away with.
if a manufacturer doesnt provide an os disc, they will (usually) have a method for you to acquire one (hotline, email etc)

with dell you just call customer care and they will supply them if not already provided

I wasn't aware that they have to provide a os cd :S
My old Compaq from 2001(now a fileserver) never came with anything but the restore files on a seperate logical partition.
I want to avoid all the licensing and trial software simply because I will never use it/need it.
The rest of the family already have a load of licensed software at their disposal anyway because they hate Linux :-)

Well the vostros definitely ship with an os cd. I'm pretty sure the other dells do as well.

if your going to use windows just buy from one of the big oems.
you can perform a clean xp or vista install in about 2 hours or less.

i feel the exact same about the trialware ****e, but remember, the more that comes with your machine, the more it is subsidised by someone else ;)
think ryaniar flights with ads on the safety leaflets...

I am going to try this out, seems fair to look elsewhere if they can't fufill my wants tbh.

just re-read your original post saying you intend to use debian.
your going to be wiping the drive anyway so buy whatevers cheapest / has best driver support and just install debian.

http://linux.dell.com may be of help if your considering dell

I had a look at the vostros on the business section, and they still come with Vista preinstalled:(
I am sticking with a Debian/XP games partition so the less the better.
Works is another piece of software I don't need either.

Ah right, I thought the only reason was that you don't want all the trialware crap.

to buy a dell with xp, copy the e-value code,
and add xp to the end

    e.g., 123-v01001 becomes 123-v01001xp

    Nice:)
I will probably go with a dell machine with Xp/vista installed and then just wipe it.
Didn't think it was such a demand for a laptop without Windows.
    Ah well...Thanks lads.
