Badminton is great I just started in Waterford in August of last year. did you check out http://www.badmintonireland.com/ They're generally nice people and are always looking for beginners and new members. The Waterford County Singles tournament is on on Wednesday So I'm looking forward to my first competitive match.

Try Melbourn/Bishopstown, Centenary (near the lough) or Carrigaline. Contact details on http://cork.badmintonireland.com

Not much near bantry except.. skibb maybe?

Yeah you can turn up on your own, but it is coming to the end of the badminton season. Most of these clubs will be taking in new people around august/september, so that would be the best time to contact them.
