Finally got around to sorting through my photos from this friendly match. They could be processed a lot better I'm sure, but I really am useless at Photoshop. Full set at Pix and Flickr. C&C welcome.

Well not quite my cup of tea they all seem dull and under exposed. some are quite soft too.

Well thanks for taking the time to comment at least Sebzy.

All of them are extremely soft imo.

I presume they're soft because you used a speed of 1/400 or lower?
    What ISO did you use?

You got better action in the Ireland v Latvia set, but again, they're too soft.

Yeah 1/400 with ISO at 1600 on a 40D and the 70-200 2.8. Is there a f/w available to up the ISO on the 40D?

    Go into Custom Functions.
    C. Fn I: Exposure
Scroll to setting 3 "ISO Expansion"
By default, it's set to 0:Off
    Set it to 1:On

When you set the ISO now, you'll see it goes from 1600 to H
H will give you an ISO of 3200
It's very grainy & will have poor colour.

What's the other work around it so? On one hand I'm being told they are too dark, and then on the other hand that they are too soft, so I'd see a contradiction in terms of the solution, ie one needing a slower shutter and the other needing a faster shutter speed? Is it a case of shooting at 1/500 or whatever and fixing them with the PP after?

I shoot mine roughly at 1/800. I find 1/400 - 1/500 to be too slow to use when shooting action shots. Tbh, your pics are both dark and soft.

I'm not a sports shooter - I'm really not interested in it.

They are both dark and soft. What you need to do is get a higher shutter speed to freeze the action, whilst still getting a high enough exposure, so you're going to be in fast lens territory - Looking at 2.8 and under. Pop up the ISO aswell then, and then bring up your exposure bias - I wouldn't worry too much about high iso's tbh - Most photos are printed on newsprint - It won't make much of a difference, and hey, you've always got Noise Ninja if you really need to get rid of it.

In fairness, you SHOULD be able to get away with ISO 1600 and 1/400 shutter speed. However, some grounds, the light is just too poor. So, the choices are (as Al said) exposure compensation, higher ISO, anticipate the action so you're steady when you shoot, and/or use a monopod or something stable.

I've been in some grounds where even getting 1/250 is quite hard, but you just have to think on your feet.

Pick parts of the pitch where the light is best, and hope you get enough action there for the required shots.

Bump the ISO up to 3200 (not the best, but in print the images will be fine).

Give up and go home.

Yeah I'm blaming you Paul, I was using your setting guides!! ;)

Here's two I've taken in the worst light I've had to be under so far -

    Settings -

    40D, 70-200mm f/2.8, ISO 1600, 1/320.

    40D, 70-200mm f/2.8, ISO 1600, 1/250

One image of that night was printed in the paper.

So, don't blame the settings. :D
