    I have a dell inspiron 6400 laptop with a wireless connection. Intel PRO/wireless 3945ABG.

I am just wondering if there are any setting I could change to improve the signal. I sometimes use it in the garden and can have trouble with it.

Maybe there is a high power usage setting or something? uses more power so it wouldnt be default?

Or is could I get a cheap USB wireless device that would be stronger?

Wireless works best on line-of-sight. move the wireless router to create a line-of-sight.

the Linksys SpeedBooster technology might be an option for you.

Use a Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster and on the laptop have a Wireless-G Notebook Adapter with SpeedBooster. Up to 35% faster according to this site. Distance of up to 150ft.

Or yeah, move your existing router to a better location :p

It is in a discreet area, and would prefer to leave it. I thought there might be a simple setting. Like how windows comes without being set for max performance as standard, (i.e. fancy shadows etc). And I think my HD was set to quiet mode by dell as standard too, had to change to max speed in the BIOS

here's another option, replace the aerials with bigger ones.

5dB High-Gain Aerials for Wireless Routers
"These high-gain aerials provide a signal gain which can in many circumstances improve your wireless coverage/range and connection speed, particularly where your planned coverage is borderline and needs a 'little extra help'."
