Irish channels - bitrate changes?

    Hi,

Just noticed that the picture quality on the Irish channels (RTE 1 & 2, TV3 etc) seems to have degraded. It's much more pixelated than before - and these had some of the highest bitrates on Sky.

Anybody else notice the same? Or am I going mad...? :)

    JD.

I'll join your low bitrate club on the basis that, I too, had noticed a disimprovement in picture quality on RTE recently. The rugby last weekend, was a prime example - seemed to be a lot of compression artefacts around the players in the long shots. I have no means of measuring the bitrate, though, so maybe Watty or Zaphod could check?

satcodx provides bitrate readings for each channel over several months.

Nice link Zaphod. RTE looks reasonable enough. Did you see one of the Sentanta channels at only 1.38 mbps??

Thanks for that Zaphod. I see when you click on the transponder bit rate, you get a history over the past few months shown in a new window. RTE 1 is showing a lot of variability and a trend to lower bit rates over the past few weeks, though.

Film Four is also way down considering it's a film channel. something like 2.33 average or less.

Found another web site showing bit rate trends over 6 months. The first graph shows how TV3 has dropped a huge amount since Decemeber...
