forgive me if this has been done to death already but i notice a lot of threads about creatine , protein ,recovery shakes and etc i know a lot of this refers to weight training but as someone who only runs what type of supplements etc would people recommend . at present im doing roughly 40 miles a week with a good balenced diet but admit to being clueless about the use of supplements (are they needed for runners with good diets ?) any advice welcome ,thanks

Number 1 supplement would be vitamins. Or making sure you take enough from food.
    Interesting article here too: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7243006.stm
Probiotic supplements reduce the number and length of infections suffered by long-distance runners, Australian research has found.

I would roughly do the same milage depending on the time of year and I take Glucosamine, Chondroitin, Omega 3 oil, MSM (Methyl-sulponyl-methane), Echinacea and a multi vitamin. These are mainly for my joints and immune system.

I would think creatine should not be taken, it is really for short bursts of energy, so would suit a sprinter. But it can add "water weight" to your muscles, so say around 7lb. So in that case the additional weight you are hauling around all those miles would offset the initial energy boost you get.
