The 8400M is DDR2, but it's pretty irrelevant. It's a basic 3D card, it plays older stuff like HL2 fine, but wouldn't be up to anything too recent.

It plays the OB games fine.... Dont be expecting AA or AF but at 14.1" wide its fine...

Actually while the 8600GT has 256 of ddr2 as reference, the 8400GS quite often has 128mb ddr3....

After doing more research the XPS M1530 seems to be a better purchase, i might make new thread about it :p

It has portability and decent gaming performance (8600m gt) for around 1200 euro

Is there any better laptops in this price range? There seems to be a crazy jump in price bracket from mid range to high end in laptop, any laptop with a card better than the 8600m gt seems to be 1800 euro +

Right now, if you want a reasonably portable 15.4" that'll play games (its not a monster but does a decent enough job of most games), it's hard to do better than the M1530. It has the DDR3 version of the 8600M - it's a little faster than the DDR2 version they use in the Vostro etc.

The M1530 is a good purchase, I got one and am very happy with it so far.

The 8800M GTX is in a few laptops now (including an Alienware 15") but as you say, there's a fairly big price difference between the mid and high-end.

How do you find gaming performance? I play mostly multiplayer games so Im used to sacrificing looks for performance... It should tear through games like Team Fortress 2 on low - medium settings?

Any other thoughts on it? Can't wait to get it!

It scores around 4300 3Dmarks (06) out of the box. The newest game i've tried on it was COD4 - single-player at full settings (except AA) and 1440x900 averages around 40FPS. You only need to lower the res and settings a little to keep the multiplayer at around 90FPS average.

I don't have TF2 but all the HL2 games fly on it anyhow so it should be grand.

I went for the 1440x900 screen, at 250nits its the brightest of the current options (1280x800 is 220nits, 1680x1050 is 200nits). Though there will be LED backlight screens at some stage if you're in no rush, they'll be much brighter than anything currently available.

I'm not buying until late June so hopefully by then the LED backlights and the Penryn CPUs will be an affordable option, I asked a Dell rep and he said the Merom CPUs will remain for a few more months as the best CPU for the M1530, but there will be a new graphics option "soon"

Wonder what it is?! a 8700m gt hopefully
