    Very good. But how does one get a conventional flashgun like an SB800 to fire into an umbrella? Lighting stands, AFAIK, are not designed to take such flashguns.

    Carrigman use a clamp in the link I have shown below and to fire it you can use a cactus v2 trigger with remote, cheap and cheerful.

    This contraption is what you want. Fits onto most stands and has a hotshoe and includes umbrella

    I just bought the flashhead/umbrella combo, and now I'm trying to work out what I'll mount it to. Will it mount to a tripod?

    thanks mloc. yes you should be able to mount on a tripod. you might need a small attachment though. ebay should be able to help you out there

    I built a homemade honeycomb grid from some drinking straws and cardboard for my SB-800, this looks very dark on flickr for some reason but gives you an idea what it does:
