Should pinging the router still work if wireless adaptor is not connecting?

I'm relatively new to the world of wireless network adaptors so I've a newbie question.

My network adaptor (a new D-Link DWL-G510) is giving me connection problems where it sometimes connects fine but often loses the connection and I'm trying to troubleshoot my way through possible solutions before giving up and returning the card to dabs.

My question is : should I still be able to ping my wireless router (an eircom Netopia 2247NWG) from the PC with the DWL-G510 even if it has lost connection to the internet?

Impossible to answer based on that. The connection could be failing from the router outwards, so it's potentially possible you could ping the router. Or the connection to the router itself is lost, meaning no way to ping.

I think the router itself is fine. I've a Nokia 770 Internet Tablet that connects across wi-fi all over the house and I had an iMac with built-in netowork adapter sitting in the same spot where the PC with DWL-G510 is and it gave no connection problems.

Of course the DSL router would sometimes lost the connection to the Internet but even when that happened I could still bring up http://192.168.1.254 to check the router on the tablet and the iMac. I cannot do so on the PC/DWL-G510 when the connection goes down.
Tbh I'm surprised by that and would have expected it to at least be able to browse to the router homepage without a problem.

If the router has lost it's connection out then it's homepage should be accessible and it should remain pingable.

    Cheers, that's what I thought :).

Pinging was failing for me yesterday but I sourced some new drivers today and it seems to be behaving now as I'd expect :).
