What courses are recommended in the Limerick/Shannon region?

I know there are plenty of courses but they have mixed reviews (Apart from Adare Manor!)

Looking to organise golf for some friends.

    Thanks.

Hey there, I can recommend the following courses in the region:
Shannon GC - Fantastic\Mature Course, flat with plenty of trees and variety. Good test and well worth a visit.
Dromoland Castle - Superb course, very scenic. Good test with a great variety. Water, trees, very mature. A real test, score here and you'll score anywhere.
Castletroy GC - Another mature parkland in limerick city. Great test, variety, greens in great nick.

There are many more I could recommend, but i have played those 3 most of all.

Beside the new, more famous Adare Manor, is the old Adare Manor course which is actually quite nice. Very old school.

I played it in munster boys in about 1999. Definitely one of my most memorable moments in golf. JP Macmanus had flown a load of the top guys in the world in pre-The Open to play in Ireland and they were on the new course next to us for two days. You could literally see Tiger, Clarke, Westwood, I think Mickleson etc a few hundred yards away with no real crowd.

First tee on the old course is up high and literally ON the road that passes the course. It's a par three, maybe a 9 iron. I'm up on the first day, first hole about to tee off and there's a rumble down the road - a frickin loud one - I step away from the ball and four motorbike gaurds go by in formation - then a black people carrier with tinted windows - then another with the window down and you can have a guess who's 'taking in the irish scenery', including me with my knocking knees!

Yes, at 17 years old, seeing Mr Woods in person for the first time was quite moment. My 9 iron shot flew about half way to the green ;)

Agree with McCuthchie. All excellent. But why not go to Adare Manor resiort its truly spectacular. Or you can always pop across the border in to Kerry for something really special!

Is the cost of the green fee an issue? If not then the likes of Adare Gold Club, Dromoland, Doonbeg are all nice courses. If you like Links then Lahinch is worth the extra drive. Shannon, Newcastlewest, Castletroy, Limerick (Ballyclough) Golf Club are all that bit cheaper but fine courses none the less. Another favorite of mine which is not too far from Limerick is Nenagh.

Also beware the confusion that frequently happens between Adare Manor Golf Club (very short but mature course founded 1900) and Adare Golf club (location for this year's Irish Open, founded in 1995).

Adare Manor resort has to be the best Parkland course in Ireland, or very close to it. Worth the money if you can get it at winter rates (75euro). The Irish Open is held hear for the next 2 years.

The short Adare Manor GC course next door is ok but only ok. Lots of fairways/tee boxes crossing. It should have stayed a 12 hole layout. Some very picturesque holes around the ruins.

Castletroy has been revamped over the last 2 years. Very nice but tough course.

Ballyclough (Limerick GC)is a beautifull old style course, tight but quite short.

Ballyneety (Limerick County GC) is wide open, more modern style. A few really nice holes but fairly average overall.

Ballykisteen is a hidden gem, really good layout which has had a lot of money spent on the drainage and greens over the last few years. One of my favourites.

Shannon is another great course, very tough tree lined and quite long. A real test, especailly if the wind is coming up the estuary.

Dromoland is quite a course, apart from 3 holes on the front nine its very close to Adare. The Par 3, 7th has one of the best views in Irish golf. Well worth it.

djb85 I would be interested to hear how you get and what you think of the courses in Limerick after your trip.

I heard that Woodstock in Ennis is a good course and good value. early bird for €20 midweek.

Ennis GC is also an option.

Limerick county is not bad either and people recommend Limerick GC.

Dromoland Castle has been revamped recently and they do early bird rates. its only 25km from Limerick towards Ennis.

Doonbeg is nice but its questionable whether its worth the green fee. I would play Lahinch first.

    have a look at www.irishGreenFees.ie

You must try get on Adare for your friends, they wont forget it, in gret shape at the moment. Also I would say Ballykisteen as a close second but its about half hours drive from the City but good road.

We ended up playing Adare Manor and Dundrum (about 45min from Limerick).
Adare Manor was excellent and green fees were €90, reasonable enough for a top course. 3 weeks before the Irish Open so it was playing tough!
Dundrum was great value for money at €40, in v.g.c. and highly recommended.

Shame that the greens in Adare were just hollowcored though. I played there a fortnight ago and it took away from the experience somewhat.

DJb have you ever played the Kerry courses? How do you rate them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭djb85

No, unfortunately I haven't had a chance yet!

Does anybody know how much membership is for Castletroy Golf Club... I'm planning on moving to Limerick and would like to join a club.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 195 ✭✭(CH3)2CHOH

I'm not 100% sure but I heard it was over 10,000Euro joining fee and about 1600euro per year.

It's a nice course but for that price ???

    Way better value around.

You could join Ballykisteen for 1500 in total last year. That got you 18months membership and use of the Gym. Only downside is its a 20-25min drive from Limerick.

That's pretty good... is it a decent gym? There's hardly a swimming pool also?

Im a bit surprised nobody mentioned Charleville. IMO, it's better than Limerick GC, Limerick County and the olld Adare. The old adare is a really short course, and apparently, the course should have been left as a 9 holer.

Charleville is nice alright, and it has 27 holes. I played Limerick County recently and was vary disappointed. I've played it 4 or 5 times over the last few years and although they do have good special offers from time to time it was in very poor condition when I played it. I agree with an earlier post, Ballykisteen is a fantastic course, some very memorable holes. Especially the shortish par 4 8th.

Thinking of joining Charleville myself. Well either Charleville, Ballykisteen or East Clare. I'd have a look at East Clare (Bodyke), lovely course, played it several times and its always in great condition.

Played Charleville on saturday, very mature. Not the longest but requires accuracy. Greens were in good nick too.

Yea, they are good atm. Charleville doesn't really have any great birdie chances apart from the 17th. Most of the holes have small greens, and are pretty hard to hit. To score well, you really need to drive well.
