Cheap flowers are better than no overpriced flowers

Buy a cheap/nice vase to put the tescos flowers in - having them waiting at home for the lady/gent in question! they'll never know they were cheap!!

use your imagination and put some thought into. won't make them look cheap.

In my experience Lidl flowers, if they're fresh, are excellent quality. The same or better than what you'll get elsewhere, you'll just pay much more elsewhere.

The lidl grand prix roses are great value for money... If ur looking at getting roses and wanna save a few quid thats what u should go for. Stay away from the cheaper ones, they die off really quick. They're €35 in Lidl, same in a shop will be around €100-120 on thursday... If not more and if you can get them, my mam owns a florist and was sold out of roses by midday. There was 4 of us out on the road doing deliveries from 7am till 10pm that night...

wat a rip off for one over commericalized day a year!

Coming from a girl.. I would be happy wth tescos 9.99 roses!

Not at all, but I guarantee you won't be handing your significant other her roses in a Lidl bag?

The question is price vs ethical, social and corporate quality...

The Question you need to ask yourself is:

Where do cheap flowers come from?

How can they be so cheap?

Will I get slapped for buying 9.99 roses? - If so why am I wasting 9.99 on a slap?

Not the best Return on Investment ever.

    QUOTE]

Probably from the warehouse beside where the expensive ones are kept - all mass produced in Holland or the likes.

Cheap because Lidl/Aldi know that folks don't want to spend euro100 on something that will be thrown in the bin by next week.

maybe the question is why do flower shops pump up their prices for Valentines day ??

Supply and Demand. Red Roses are a fresh product produced for 1 day. If there is more demand than supply available then the auction price in holland goes us. If you think all your flowers come from Holland you are unfortunately mistaken. The only way to get Red Roses under €3 a stem wholesale price is to import them from Kenya, Columbia or other countries around the world. But you need to consider the carbon footprint of a rose travelling from Kenya, to holland, then to dublin then to the shop you buy it in. Not to mention the possible working conditions of the staff of the growers and the use or misuse of water. This is the true cost of your 9.99 roses.

When do you see a florist driving a nice looking car? If florists were ripping you off, do you not think they would be a little better off than they are. It's a tuff business and it's not all "Rosy" ha ha

I notice that Tesco's UK are advertising the roses for £4.75 - equating to €6.40. Must be the VAT difference I guess!

Yes indeed. Consider the carbon footprint of roses grown outdoors in a tropical country, where all the energy required comes from natural sunlight. Now consider the carbon footprint of roses grown in an enormous greenhouse in Holland in winter, with all the artificial lighting and heat required.
The Dutch roses have a far higher carbon footprint, even taking into account the air transport for the Kenyan roses.

I think all the Lidl roses are from Holland, their dozen deluxe roses do anyway. I think the lower priced ones are Dutch as well. As for the carbon footprint, no offence to FlowersMadeEasy and Zippy, but as far as I'm concerned that's a load of baloney, although it's a handy excuse for charging more.

I agree with FlowersMadeEasy on one point though, it is a case of supply and demand. Florists put their prices up around Valetines Day because the demand is sky high and the market will bear it. There's actually nothing wrong with that, that's how a market economy works. Hotels, airlines and other retailers do exactly the same at their peak periods. What annoys me is people paying these exhorbitant prices, and then whinging about it afterwards. If anyone doesn't want to pay the high prices, they should get their flowers at Tesco, Lidl, Aldi etc... at a reasonable price, and be happy with their purchase.

Was it like dunnes, had flowers from €12.99 up to €60. In tesco you bought a different type of flower to the €9.99 ones??

Florists charge what they want because they know that on that one faithful day of the year people will be looking for flowers.
Is there any other single day in the year where you are guaranteed sales of flowers to the amount that valentines day pulls in??

Tesco, Lidl, Aldi etc are doing the right thing by not charging a fortune!!

The good thing about buying the cheapo ones is that you can afford to give them to more than one girl :D

Hence doubling your chance of some sweet luvvin' :D

Just buy some the day after or the day after that, half price. Smooooth. ;)

I'll be popping into both Tesco's and Aldi in the morning so.

Popped into Tesco this morning, and I can see how the sell a dozen for €9.99. They were very withered looking even though they are meant to be displayed until 15th February.

Don't mean to dis' (in the sense of disrespect ghetto style) anyone who bought them, and maybe your Tesco had better quality cheap roses, but my girlfriend would rather get nothing than that withered rubbish in my local Tesco.

Due to time constraints I did get flowers in Tesco, but they cost €30.00, and contained no roses at all.

Happy Valentine's Day one and all.:)

The cheap ones come from a sweat shop in China. Thats how they're so cheap.

    No.

They are so cheap because that particular retailer is

    a) running them as a loss leader
    b) looking for less margin markup than the florists who have literally doubled the price of a rose for this one day

So don't be ashamed to buy 9.99 roses.

& tomorrow, don't give your custom to those florists who doubled their prices.

They say (in today's Irish Independent, where they are named) that its the laws of supply & demand, & while there is undoubtedly a bit of this, in reality its profiteering, pure & simple.

Not in all cases.. My mam sells the flowers at the same price till valentines day. Ideally u order ur flower during the week, she and her staff work late the night before and start early the next day making up the orders...

She charges extra on valentines day because she has to take staff of making up pre-booked orders or deliveries to make them up... If she needs to go and get more stock it costs her more to buy them cause of the demands on the supplier...

Now some places just charge more over the days comming up to Valentines day cause they can and want to.... It pays to plan ahead, order a week in advance and you'll save a good few quid and a bit of hassle... Never leave it till Valentines day to try n get flowers from a florist...

Got half a dozen for €20 today at the junction of Mary Street and Capel Street. They are rather niced indeed.

Turned out they were a 'luxury bouquet' of roses. They were nice though. Reason I bought from Tesco's? After two debacles with florists in the past two years with deliveries (for roses costing €120+) I decided to buy myself the evening before.

Last year the florist didn't deliver until 4:50pm - and that was after repeated phone calls. And they really didn't give a toss about it.

Is there a man holding a gun to anyones's head forcing them to buy flowers ? Nobody has to buy them if they don't want to.

I imagine the Independent charge different Ad rates depending on demand for the particular location eg Front Page versus the bottom of page 14. Of course the Indo is such a sanctimonious groaning old rag that they see the mote in others eyes whilst ignoring the beam in their own.

And I'm not a florist just someone who doesn't see the point of spending a fortune on a makey-up day of the year..

Not sure how this became an Indo rant, but I agree

    - not only don't give your custom next day to florists who doubled their prices on Valentines, try the Irish Times next day also !
