Is my girlfriend's house haunted?

    Hi,

My girlfriend still lives at home with her folks in a large old house. It's been around since around the 1880's if I remember correctly, possibly a few years younger than that, but definitely at least 100 years old. It's a very large house, about 7 bedrooms, a large basement which used to be servants quarters and a large amount of land around it.
Both her parents are doctors and they initially ran it as a private old folks home about 15 years ago. When they closed the home down they moved in and turned it into a family home.

Here's the thing. I never thought about this until I sat down and spoke to my mate who asked me a few questions about it...

When I stay over and it's only the two of us in the house I'm convinced that on more than 2 or 3 occassions I hear clunking and knocking (not unusual for an old house I hear you say) that sounds like someone walking up and down the landing and stairs.

It's a spooky house and I don't like walking around it in the dark. It's a wierd kind of dark... if that's somehow explainable. I like to bring the dog around with me cos they're more susceptible to stuff??? and I like the dog :)

her brother also told me a few stories of waking up paralysed in the middle of the night, while his girlfriend went to the bathroom, as if someone was kneeling on his chest... again, sounds like a simple case of sleep paralysis where the mind wakes up before the body.. but on her return from the bathroom in quite a hurry she said that as she made her way back to the room she saw someone/womething walking towards the room. when she arrived in the room his paralysis stopped.

the house has an internal phone line too so someone can ring the kitchen from the landing etc... This has a distinctive ringtone different to that of a call coming from an external source. On an occassion the brother was telling me that when he was alone in the house the internal ring sounded... he didn't answer it as he knew he was the only one in the house and it was the internal line ringing. He instead sat down and did a nice póó. Well, not literally....

Another thing is certain areas of the house sometimes change temperature. you don't really notice it but on a few occassions I can slightly see my breath in front of me but I can't feel the cold... anyone know what I mean? Not sure if I'm describing it correctly. After a few minutes the 'cold' is gone and there's no slight cloud from my breath anymore.

anyway, that's all I know that has happened to me and some others in the house. I must make a mental note to ask her folks about it.

anything I can do further to get more proof? I like to think of myself as a 50/50 sceptic. I know there's something out there but there's so much shite and hoaxes that it's hard to believe a lot these days.

So, I open it to the floor :)

to be honest, it doesnt sound too haunted to me. old houses do indeed make noises (i live in one myself). its easy to spook yourself in the dark so I wouldnt worry about that. sleep paralaysis is a common slepping problem (commonly known as the old hag syndrome) so again, i wouldnt class that as paranormal and if its an old house, or if its windy outside it is possible for phone lines to ring internally. they are electrical to a degree so you' d never know with such things - could just be a fault with the phone. temperatures can change without us noticing and Ive been in many an old house where one part would be freezing and the rest warm enough.

all in all, i wouldnt worry about it being haunted (just my 2 cent).
