Nokia 5500 Sport not showing "new messages"

So I have a Nokia 5500 Sport, and when I receive a new message I don't get the "1 New Message" on the main part of my phone, instead I have to check my indox every 5 minutes. Anyone know what the deal is with this? Also after every message I send my phone freezes?
