Remarkable offer from O2 UK

Every so often someone posts here about the cheapest way to phone Ireland or send messages from the UK so I thought I'd bring one of O2 UK's best-known secrets to the attention of all ex-pats reading this forum and those members who have girlfriends/boyfriends over there.

O2 UK have a new PAYG SIM called 'Your Country'. Details of it are scant and where some do exist they are misleading. Initially I thought it was like Vodafone ES' offering "Mi Pais" where the user gets preferential rates to the country of their choosing but not so.

    Here then are the facts.

Pick up an O2 'Your Country' SIM at any O2 UK outlet or Carphone Warehouse. These are free of charge.

Top it up by anything from 10 to 30 GBP. In the event where you put 30GBP on, you immediately enjoy 200 FREE minutes to any landline or mobile in the world for the next 30 days, when calling from the UK. I say free because the 30GBP credit remains for you to do with as you will -calling UK numbers, sending SMS/MMS etc. Even international SMS are discounted and charged at the same price as UK SMS.

Each free call begins with a recorded announcement "free call" so you are in no doubt as to the status of your call. You do not designate a country -you can ring ANY country, landline or mobile. When the free minutes run out -and here's the thing- any international calls then made are taken out of your credit at a reduced rate because the 'Your Country' SIM automatically has a special bolt-on applied to it.

There is no catch. I got several and it works perfectly. Even the calls to UK numbers are not expensive and 10GBP goes a long way (if you only put 10 on you get 50 free minutes of international calling).

O2 staff are remarkably ill-informed as to its exact workings so pay no attention to the various nonsense you will be told at point of sale. In fact any O2 UK PAYG SIM can be turned into a 'Your Country' SIM by shortcode trigger.

What I have written above is the case and it is an unbelievable deal for someone living in the UK who needs to call international mobiles a lot.

As many as 4 of these SIMs may be ordered FOC from o2.co.uk but I suspect they may only be delivered to UK addresses. I ordered four and received them within a few days.

    Do you live in UK?

I live in the Occupied Territories (OTs). For once, we were allowed to have something delivered without the usual "excludes NI". Ulster says "give us a few SIMs, ah go on". Do you want one?

Do you have a direct link to th free sims? I have an o2 sim which I will opt in in a few weeks when I go over but would be handy to get a few more for rest of the family

The offer only applies to calls made from within the UK. You could use up the credit in Ireland but what would be the point?

I no longer see the offer for free SIMs online so that is perhaps finished now and therefore apologies. But the SIM may be picked up for free in any of their shops.

Not at all: it appears to be only because their online shop is currently offline for maintenance.
