    Hi

4x4 s are cheaper in Australia if someone was living there for a year and decided to bring one back to sell anyone know what would be the story?

I know if you have a car in the UK you can bring it back and pay no VRT (once every 3 years or something) and its easy enough thats EU though.

Even the range rover sport 2.6 is $87,900.00 AUD = 54,237.12 EUR and they are 80K odd here? shipping 3 K maybe? any opinions? not on the car at all Id say a Landcruiser is better value in Oz as there are subsidies on them.

Im more interested in clearing the VRT if one was to bring one home to sell

The thing is though that the Ozzies like their big thirsty petrol engines, mostly V8s so there is little or no market for them here at the moment. Come July they will be less appealing again. Could be next to impossible to shift one here unless it is diesel of course.

Hi Bazz I know they will be more expensive to tax but that 2.6L is the same spec as the ones for sale here, Id be avoiding anything that wont be easy sold.

So if you got the same spec as is for sale here anyone know the ins and outs of shipping and paying the VRT or any VAT that might be due? Would the warranty still apply in EU garages?

If it was my own car for six months in OZ are'nt you allowed to just bring it home?

PS any model 4x4 that would be recommended welcome but im more interested in the hassle inolved, I must call the revenue as I have nt got the right info from their site

You may bring onw vehicle in in your lifetime time but you have to prove you owned, insured and taxed said vehicle for a period of more than 6 months and proof of reidence is also wanted. Customs now ask for yours pps number when clearing cars to catch traders. You then cannot sell the vehicle for 1 year if you do not want to pay the duty.
On the other hand a commercial is only 50 euro to clear.
Container home is about 4500 dollars iirc. Mate brought home a diesel navara, they are dirt cheap out there at the mo..

I second that. Bring a diesel in definitely. New petrol cars in Ireland are on the way out unless you are as rich as a sultan.

Shipping would be a major problem.
Cant imagine where you'd even start. Maybe 3-4 steps along the way involving many different handlers and if the car gets damaged chasing who caused it will be tough.
I havent a clue on the cost , certainly 4,000e+
Warranty again a major problem , who would want an prestige 2nd car that has an Australian warranty?
25kish difference in your figures on the prices IE vs AUS.
    -4k for shipping
    -Vat (if new)
-Regular used car depreciation during shipping (1-2 months).
-Cost of putting out 60k for a few months.
-Devalued car when you come to change , at least 5-8k

Dont see it stacking up financially.

Cheers for that Slideways a commercial would be just the job then and it would be handy enough to insure and tax whilst out there too cheers for the help all.

Don't bring back a commercial. They're far cheaper to buy here than passenger, no VRT. Defeats the purpose

there are two options. contianorise the car and have delivered to any port with containor faiclities eg dublin. or Roll On Roll Off to Southampton.

Im not sure of any RORO ships from Oceania docking directly in Ireland???

RORO is so much cheaper than containor Ive heard people getting there cars to southampton form Oz for 700quid sterling.

Me I considered it cheaper to pack all my belongings into a 11 seater landcruiser HJ75 aka "Troopie" drive it into a containor and ship it to dublin. than to get a removal company to move it.

If you can take the RORO option to southampton and im sure its handy to get a freight truck to take it over to ireland. Though im not sure of the bill of landing issues if it is for ultimate deliver to ireland.

I think this applies in all EU countries but if the car is over 10years old it is exempt from the SVA a super tough MOT. likewise you exempt form taxes if you can prove youve owned it for x number of months usually 6 ( i was asked for 12months) including registration, and insurance theyd be looking for utility bills in australia.

(in Australia registration includes mandatory 3rd party insurance )

Im registering my car in the north i need to add things like MPH on the speedo, Fog lights fitted, and i think those little indicators on the side panel.

I emailled the shipping company (who only takes care of shipping, containor hire and export handling.) to warn me what ship it would arrive on and ETA so i can get quotes for import agents and actually pick the car up. i got an email on the 30thApril stating the ETA as the 26th April!!!! and i would be getting daily charges for any more than 5 days on the quayside. I hada go with the first agent and i fell rightly stung and very phished at the shipping company.

in all i paid about 4000dollars to the shipping company (including 900 for them to restrain the car in the containor with talk of wooden structures encapsulating the thing only to find its 4 rotten straps and a lump of wood) and 550quid to the import agent in Belfast.

for some reason the import agent wouldnt answer his phone and only communicate via email ....very frustrating. .. and suspect come to think of it.

I now believe anyone with agent in their title are out to ream you, recruitment, sales, special, estate .....

Not 'one in your lifetime' lol :D. There is some limit, but not as restrictive as that! And you can bring more than one vehicle at a time, just have to be able to prove you owned and used it for more than six months (mileage now versus when you bought it, insurance cert etc).

your right, there is some amount of rubbish spouted on here about VRT and importing, check the previous posts and threads.

on the amount you can bring in, I was told by someone in the VRT office in Roslare that .. 'You can bring in as many cars as you own, but you have to prove that you qualify for the VRT exemption'. If the car and the ownership history are legit you have no problem.

They have heard all stories, and attempted loopholes before!! by the time you factor in depriciation (as you can't sell if for 12months), shipping, cost of finance etc ..i'd be very suprised if you made a penny, or even broke even by the time you sold it.
