I've had this guitar for years and tbh I'm not botherd gettin a new one (mainly cause I'm in love with this cheap ass thing).

    http://www.thomann.de/ie/epiphone_lp_special_black.htm

Would putting some 490's in it be a good thing or a bad thing?

Personally I'd go for GFS pickups (http://www.guitarfetish.com) They're cheap and sound pretty good. I've bought them before and was very happy with the sounds. :)

I think its a bit stupid to be putting several hundred €'s worth of Gibson pickups in a €200 Epiphone, but thats just me.

    This one in the neck

...and this in the bridge would look and sound awesome in that guitar!!

Best part is that the two together only costs $70! :)

I can get the 490'sx2 for a 100 euro so the price isnt an issue really. Those pickups look pretty good, I'll have a look at some reviews and might just go for them, thanks for the help!

gibson 1957 Les Paul PAF re-issues FTW. (in the neck) and the bridge pickup should be a Seymour Duncan invader.
OOOOh yeah that guitar would sing.

    Try this website http://www.ericsguitars.com/dimarzioprices.html

I used to get my Seymours from www.roguemusic.com
Ask for the Hot Rodded pair of Seymour Duncans. It works out much cheaper with this set.

I have an Epiphone Les Paul too. I fitted it with 2 Dimarzio X2N's and it sounds much better.

I'll second Joe on the GFS's. I have a set of Mean 90's and they are pretty cool for the price. I was putting them in a cheap guitar and they did the trick. Very clear sounding and great when slightly overdriven. Not too good when really pushed though but that could have something to do with the extremly cheap electronics in the guitar.

I ended up getting a 490 and a 498 for a great price but the only thing is there uncovered. I was hoping to get chrome/silver covers for them but I haven't a clue where to get them. Also looking for an unfinished epiphone neck with plate fret marks.

Any suggestions on where I can get a good price?

eBay is your best bet for an Epiphone neck, good luck with it! I doubt they come up often. You could also check http://www.axesrus.co.uk , they usually have Mighty Mite Les Paul style bolt-on necks. They *might* fit, I don't know though.

Joe Robot, just out of interest which gfs pickups are they? There are a few identical ones on the site and i'm looking to upgrade the pickups in a very old Ninja Star les paul replica, so am interested.

The top one is a Mean 90 and the bottom one is a Bigmouth POWER (not the extra power one, i'd say that'd be too much with the p90. wouldn't really be balanced. )

    :)

I've used the Crunchy PAF and the Lil' Killer. The lil' Killer was my favourite, anything from smooth lead tones to jazzy sounds when tapped, sounded great for slightly dirty rhytmn playing too!
