Don't know if this is an NTL thing or a BBC thing but my BBC World is showing a message for at least the last half hour

"LE TRASMISSIONI RIPRENDERANNO ALLE ORE 23:00"

Anyone care to explain? And I don't mean I want a translation ;)

This is because BBC World broadcasts from Eutelsat W2 16° EAST whose footprint focal point is Central Europe. At certain times of the day at this time of year, the satellite is just too far from NTLs satellite dish in Dublin which points to W2 16° EAST to receive a good signal for BBC World.

^ According to LyngSat it is broadcast on both 13°E and 19.2°E and not 16°E.

NTL of course also carries News 24, if you need your fill of BBC News and World is down.

True, but News 24 is aimed at UK audiences and often leads with "local" British news.

Got that Italian message again last night :(

Gee thanks Mossy. As BBC World is a 24 hour channel and we are getting this message up on the screen for at least 6 hours a day, can you provide your explanation of this phenomenon to the original poster. Can't wait.:)

Actually BBC World does does broadcast on W2 16°E, namely 11575 H 30000 3/4. I am not sure if UPC uses this channel for rebroadcast though.

Not unless they have a very long cable running to a satellite dish in Madagascar.

Exactly. maybe Hotbird 13°E is using 16°E as their feed for BBC World, and when the link goes down, we get this message in Italian. Then again I'm only guessing.
Mossy obviously knows the answer. He will let us know in due course.
