The new world of macro... 1 large image

I just got my new (second hand :)) Nikkor 50mm f2 from Italy a few days ago and tried reverse coupling macro for the first time ever.

It's amazing how narrow the DOF can be and what lies under the visible eye.

Here's an example of a shot I just took (handheld) of the laptop screen - it's a 50% crop.

Magnification ratio should be 4 times life size (50mm reverse mounted on a 200mm lens). The ISO was at 1600 so excuse me for the softness.

What this has taught me is that 4:1 magnification is way too big for my needs. Of course the beauty of reverse coupling on my 55-200 zoom is that I can just zoom back to 1:1 magnification for an easier time at focusing.

Now to find ways of lighting things up! :D

p.s - can anyone guess where this "c" can from? It's visible on the photography forum page, near the top ;)

I've found that the close working distances make it difficult to photograph anything that isn't already lit up (I think working distance is around 5 cm from the front element). The shadow of the lens is quite large.

    Heh - it's the c from "New Challenge!?!" :D

    RGB indeed!

Good going with the 4:1 - yer gonna have to look into an off camera cord for your flashgun for lighting though!

I've already ordered an optical slave flash trigger for my SB-600 (unfortunately the D40 doesn't have wireless flash built in - I'd need the D70 and above for that feature :()
