Does anyone know can you let Tortoise's roam around the house or do they have to be kept in a heated tank all the time?

It's not a good idea to do so according to the tortoise trust website.
They need heat and water to be available at all times.

i have a tunisian tortoise, have it for 7 years. if its a warm sunny day i let it out in the garden in a pen i have the top has wire mesh in case birds or cats are around. i don't leave it out if i'm inside. i let it out in the evenings and it will spend maybe 15-20 mins walking around the sitting room. it will walk around the skirting board ( i think its a boundry thing ) then it will sit in front of the fire or just flake out. just keep an eye on it.
