What do/did you call your grandparents?

Someone recently laughed at me when I made reference to my granny, and called her nana. I thought that was a standard for calling your grandmother, but apparently its not.
Both my grandfathers were dead before I was born, so I never had to worry about that, but even now, I don't know what I would call them. To my family, I'd say mums dad, or dads dad, but I've no idea what I'd call a grandfather when addressing him directly.
So do you grandma? Nana? Gramps? What do you call yours?

They were grand dad and nanna to me, and everytime i hear a kid refering to their grandparents as that it makes me smile, so anyone who laughs at me for it can bugger off, frankly.

I called my maternal granny nana also and my father's mother was always referred to as granny X, well not granny X, substitute surname for X.

I think the nana thing was because she was very close to our family while my father's mother lived 40 miles away and we didn't see her as often and probably weren't so close.

My Mum's parents are Nana & Grandpa

My dad's parents are Granny and his dad was apparently called Grandad by everyone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,028 ✭✭✭gidget

I called both sides nana and granda. Sadly only the nana's left now!!

I knew a girl growing up, who was made to address her nana as Grandmother - always thought of that as a strict reference to be made to one.

I had one grandad called grandad (the other died before I was born). And the grannies were called granny and nanny to distinguish them from each other. :)

I had no grannies alive in my lifetime, , one gramdfather was granda and the other Tadgh (he wasn't into the whole grandpa thing). I have a great granny and she's called nan.

    Same as above.

Just asked my bf this question. He's of Indian descent and maternal/paternal grandparents have different names to distinguish between them. His paternal grandparents were aji and aja (female and male) and maternal were nani and nana (female and male). It's a lot more interesting then granny and grandad anyway... I feel rather boring now!

    Just one grandparent called Papa.

Nana , but then again her real name is Nancy so maybe that's a further reason to refer to her as that .

Grandad was grandad when he was alive .

On the other side of my family one of my grandparents had already died before I was born and the other died before I could speak .

both my grand dads where dead before I was born, we used to call our grannys, grannyO and grannyB but worm food would probably be more appropriate these days.

I call my mum's mum Nanny. I say 'call' - she's dead but I hardly just forgot about her when she died! So I still say Nanny when I'm talking about her. My whole family call(ed) her Nanny, my mum, my dad, my aunts and uncles, my cousins.

On the other side of the family I call my grandparents by their first names. I think my granny has always felt too young to be a granny. (She's deluded!)

Nana followed by surname for each granny and Grandie followed by surname for Grandad. All four were alive right into my 20s and that's a real priviledge for anyone. My kids only ever knew one granny -she's still alive. They've missed out badly I think.

Most of the time I called them Granny and Grandad but some times I would call them by their first names.

Dad's parents died well before I was born. I call my mom's parents Nana and Grandad, although my Nana passed away in 2003. I'm only 16 now, I missed out! :(

I've only one grandparent left and I call him Grandad. Call my dads mother Granny, and iirc I used to call my mothers mum Nan but I can't really remember properly as she died when I was very young.

My other grandfather died long before I was born so I've always just referred to him as my mums Dad.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 61 ✭✭Zee Deveel

Nana and Grandad. Not that I ever knew either Grandfather, but my paternal grandmother, who I'm quite close to would often talk about him, and I've come to think of him as my Grandad, whereas the other is just 'mam's dad'.

My grandparents on my dad's side were Nana and Grandad... on my mom's side, they are Nellie and Seán, we've always called them by their first name, even my niece now who's 2 calls them Nellie and Seán, but I guess it would be hard to go around calling them great-nana or great-grandad?!

Same issue as you regarding grandfather's, but I'd probably have called him Granda, as that's what my mam refers to *her* granda as and refers to her dad when she's talking to me as "your granda".

I called my Nana Nana. I don't know how standard it is, but I've certainly never been laughed at, and I'm surprised you were. My considered opinion is that said "someone" was actually an ignorant git

I had my 4 grandparents til I was 13, Nana and Papa were my mams parents and gran and grandad were my dads

papa is the only one still alive today and is a great grandfather to 7 kids now!

I hate hearing kids nowadays calling grandparents by their name, they should know where they came from and who everyone is.

I've always called one set of grandparents by their first names and I know where I came from and I certainly know that they're my grandparents. In fact my granny prefers that we call her by her first name and in doing so we are respecting her wishes.

My mother's parents I called Pop Pop and Gran Gran and my father's parents I called Granny and Bedste (abreviated form of the Danish for grandfather).

Unfortunately Bedste is the only one left now.

    Mothers parents:
    Nanny and Grandad

    Fathers parents:
Grandad( died about 22 years before i was born), and Granny

Always called Granny and Granda to their faces. If speaking about them, it was Granny and Granda followed by their respective surnames. I lost the first grandparent when I was 16, and the last when I was 31 so had a good innings with the grandones!

As an aside, when speaking to any of my uncles/aunts as a chisler, I always called them "uncle gerry" or "aunty maura", etc., didn't drop the "prefix" till I was an adult!

Mamo and Grandie are both new ones to me, never heard either of those before.
