    Hi
As mentioned in a previous thread I am going to new york and want to buy lenses for my canon 400D. I got a kit 18-55 lens with it but would like to go for something a bit better and haven't a clue what to look for.

There are so many available its almost confusing when you are a beginner like myself.

I want to be able to take shots of my family and outdoor wildlife maybe landscapes aswell. Maybe I am asking for too much here but is there a good multi purpose lens that would fit this lot or should I be looking a 2 or 3 different lens.

I have about 500-600 to spend on them.

    Thanks.

This is a useful and well reviewed lens that might be suitable:

I have the sigma 18-200MM OS lens as well as the basic kit lens with my 400D
and its not a bad lens although does tend to struggle a little in low light conditions - the auto focus goes mental on the camera!

I got this over the 70-300MM canon IS lens since it covers the same range as the kit lens and so it meant i wouldnt have to swap lens so much - at the expensive over not having quite as much upper range.

To be honest at 10 megapixel you can crop down anyway at what you zoom on and still have a large picture

The optical stabilisation is a big plus. And it seems pretty well built.

Its a heavy enough bugger and is better balanced with the battery grip on the camera - i'd definitly recommend you pick up one of these. Get a second battery to chuck in it while you are at it.

Its this one on the B&H site

Its decent enough for landscape, potraits and very basic wildlife although it doesnt really have the reach to make it totally useful for this - although these are the compromises you will make. Its a decent beginner all rounder.

    Theres a review here
