Putting in extra ram might help. Try formatting and re-installing windows as well.

Putting in RAM is easy, try crucial.com to see how much and what type of RAM your machine can accomodate.

Every pc accumulates rubbish with use and reformatting every so often gives a clean slate. Everything is wiped clean in a reformat so back up music documents etc before you do it.

Make sure too that you have checked for virus and spyware to see if anything could be affecting speed.

Try the memory first - selling xp with only 256mb is criminal Igb should make a huge improvement if you can afford it. Usually it is a matter of simply unscrewing a plate on the base of the laptop - two little clips on either side hold the memory and would push those out and slide out the memory and just replace it

You could download and run CCLeaner. It removes all temporary unwanted files from your web browser / windows etc. Then try One scanner (Msn antivirus/spyware scan)

i would say reinstall windows too. but if you dont have the drivers handy and you dnt fancy backing up ur stuff and then reinstalling all your software:

-You could run a spybot scan and clear out any crap you have

-you could go to start - run - msconfig and turn off some of/most of what starts up when the computer boots.

-uninstall/delete whatever you dnt need/use and then defragment ur disk.

    - a program called O&O clever cache is keeping my old work horse alive at this stage

    -increase your pagefile
